The Experience

This chic hotel has rather good views, a clean sweep up the Jurassic coast all the way to Chesil Beach and on to Portland Bill. It sits high on the hill with one foot in town and the other paddling in the water. Directly below, the Cobb curls into the sea, the very spot where Meryl Streep withstood crashing waves in The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Outside, there’s a sun-trapping garden, where guests fall asleep in deckchairs, then a lookout tower with big sea views for a romantic dinner for two. Inside, an easy elegance flows: stripped wood floors, windows everywhere, an airy bar for pre-dinner drinks, an attractive sitting room with lots of books. There’s a smart dining room that could double as a ballroom, then a conservatory brasserie that opens onto a terrace for lunch in summer. Both offer tasty, local food, perhaps Lyme Bay scallops, chicken with cavolo nero, a white chocolate mousse. Bedrooms, most with sea views, have warm colours, comfy beds, padded headboards, robes in fine bathrooms.
