The Experience

A lovely old stone fireplace in the sitting room, local art on the walls and attractive fabrics give much character to this cosy cottage. Leave your hats and coats in the porch, settle into the comfy sofa and chairs – you’ll find lots of books, guides, cookery books and maps to leaf through and a cupboard full of games. The separate dining room has bench seating for convivial meals and the kitchen is compact but well-equipped with a sweet window seat.

Upstairs there are bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin/double, 1 single) in neutral colours with feather and down duvets and pillows, soft throws and painted wooden furniture – one has views towards the church tower, all are warm and very comfortable.

A five-minute walk will take you to an independent greengrocers, bakery and butcher for stocking up, and in summer you can eat in the little garden surrounded by mature trees and shrubs, or hide in the summer house.

Reviews

If you are looking for a peaceful break away, this is the place for you. With independent shops and eateries on your doorstep, you can come and do as much or as little as you wish. Cosy up in front of the fire with a book or take a short drive out to explore all the Jurassic Coast has to offer. It is easy to relax here.

Lovely little cottage, the garden is absolutely beautiful.

Henry, Vancouver

Lovely cottage, exceptionally well equipped. Stunning garden. Very helpful instructions on use of appliances. Sue is an excellent host. Only issue is road parking which is challenging. Tips for other travellers Great location for visiting gardens, NT properties, beaches etc. lots of brochures in the cottage. Brassica is great for dinner if you’re there at the weekend.

Sarah, Knaresborough

What a wonderful cottage this is - we have loved every minute here. We have had dinner at Brassica and the Ollerod, both of which were excellent. We walked at Branscombe ("Walking the Jurassic Coast" walk 5) which we loved. Also “Dorset and the Jurassic Coast" walk 11 which starts and finishes in Beaminster. A good walk but do it in the direction shown in the guide as that gives the best views as you come back into Beaminster. Golden cap is always glorious. There is so much to do here and we have only scratched the surface. Thank you Sue and Paul for a perfect stay in lovely Beaminster.

Rebecca, Southampton

Blackbird Cottage seems a much loved little property with thoughtful attention to detail. The layout is neat and attractive, the bedding is of a high quality and luxurious, the towels are thick, the kitchen well equipped and the whole cottage is spotless. It is very well located in beautiful Beaminster which bustles delightfully on Saturday mornings. It is like going back in time. Parking is a slight pain but if there was not a space on the lane we parked near the sport’s field and moved the car when one became available. Everything very well organised.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are four cafés in Beaminster and two local pubs - The Red Lion and The Greyhound Inn. You can join The Wessex Way or The Hardy Way from the cottage for glorious countryside strolls. Mapperton House and Gardens is a 5-minute drive and the Jurassic Coast is 20 minutes for beaches. Lyme Regis is half an hour and Framptons of Bridport, a traditional family butcher and deli is a 15-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Sue Beddoe

  • Beautiful countryside walks are in all directions from the doorstep at Blackbird Cottage. Discover this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with walks to suit different abilities.
  • A great place to relax in all seasons. Enjoy a cosy wood burning stove in the colder months and in the Summer watch the sunset from the summer house, listen to the chiming of the clock tower and the evening bird song.
  • With a good selection of pubs and award-winning restaurants all within a strolling distance from the cottage, Beaminster is a great place for a relaxed stay with friends and family.
  • Follow in the footsteps of 19th century fossil hunter Mary Anning and visit the stunning Jurassic Coastline. Charmouth is one of the best locations and has regular fossil hunting guided tours.
  • Beaminster is close to both South Somerset and East Devon making it the perfect location to discover this part of the West Country.
  • Visit Mapperton House with its award-winning garden and re-wilding project. It’s the local stately home and film buffs may recognised it as the location for Carey Mulligan’s 2015 version of Thomas Hardy’s ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’.
