The Experience

A former WI hall dating back to the 18th-century with a warm atmosphere and spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area. There’s plenty of space for everybody to cook together and all the gear you need, plus basics for cooking and a welcome hamper of treats to get you in the holiday mood. If you don’t feel like cooking then The Castle is a 200-yard stumble for good pub grub and local ales – they even serve a cooked breakfast.

The sitting room is cosy with a wood-burner, books, games and WiFi so even rainy days can be fun. You’ll also find a comprehensive information folder about local walks and shops. Mostly you’ll enjoy the fabulous walks from the door up into the hills, packing up a picnic and heading to the sea, enjoying copious wild flowers in spring, breathing lovely fresh air and listening to birdsong.

Return to comfortable, simple bedrooms upstairs and a shared bathroom with a proper bath and walk-in shower.

Reviews

Lovely cottage, stylishly furnished with very comfortable beds. A generous supply of fluffy towels, soaps, along with a kind welcome pack in the kitchen made us feel glad to have chosen Halcyon. Our mini break was soggy with little sunshine, but we were cosy with heating and log fire.

Deborah, London

This is a lovely place. Stylish, cosy and comfortable. More space inside than what you would expect from the outside. The cove with stunning scenery is only a short walk away and there are lots of places to have a drink or a meal. The cottage is well equipped with everything one could need. We stayed for two weeks and were sorry to leave!

Mieke, Obbicht, the Netherlands

We stayed at the cottage for 5 days and had the most lovely time – it was like home from home! Emma had thought of everything, from prosecco to washing tabs to a generous amount of logs for the fire, which made it a completely stress-free place to unwind. The location was perfect too, being a short walking distance from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door – and a short drive from other beautiful coastline walks. After a long day of walking, it was lovely to get back to a warm, cosy cottage and sit in front of the fire, not to mention the great shower pressure too! We can’t wait to return, thank you.

Tilly, London

It's cute, it's cosy and it's full of character. If you are looking for a retreat where you can just pull up your car and stop and flop then this is the place. Halcyon Cottage lends itself to calm and rest – you notice the quietness the minute you arrive. Visiting in winter it is noticeably quieter, but even when summer visitors come this little cottage is tucked away but still convenient to the local amenities.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're just off the quiet road that leads from West Lulworth to Lulworth Cove and you can walk to Mupe Bay or Durdle Door – both with stunning views. As well as the nearby pub, you're a stroll away from the Limestone Hotel or The Cove for drinks/dinner; the Boat Shed café does a lovely breakfast, cakes and light lunch. There's a little shop in the village for basics (open in high season) and a few places to pick up an ice cream on the way to the Cove. The Jurassic Coast is close for fossil hunting, rock pooling and water sports.

Local points of interest from Emma Scattergood

  • For anyone who loves Doctor Who, rock climbing or simply craggy cliffs, a visit to the disused quarry at Winspit is a must. Park at the picturesque Worth Matravers and walk down. Oh, and enjoy a pint and pasty from the tiny bar at the pub later!
  • You can walk directly to Durdle Door, over the fields. And (sshh, don't tell anyone) when the army Ranges are open, take the coast path in the opposite direction and you will find a fascinating Jurassic 'Fossil Forest' then a stunning turquoise bay.
  • The Boat Shed cafe, over looking the Cove, is a fabulous spot for breakfast but we also love to take a bottle of wine and some crisps down to its benches after 5pm. The day visitors have gone by then, and the view is all yours!
  • You are just a short drive from so many Purbeck highlights. such as the majestic Corfe Castle, Old Harry Rocks, and the stunning Studland beaches where a guide will take you kayaking and foraging for sea vegetables - then create a feast with your finds!
  • Culture vultures can visit the tiny cottages belonging to Lawrence of Arabia or Thomas Hardy, and spend a tranquil afternoon in the gardens/art gallery at Sculpture by The Lakes
  • Stargazers can enjoy the most beautiful of displays at the cottage, especially in the autumn and winter nights, thanks to the lack of street lighting. But remember to take your torch when you pop up the road to the cosy thatched pub for dinner or a pint!
