The Experience

The shell-pink façade topped with thatch has drawn admiring looks for generations – this little cottage built into the cliff once housed the library for its neighbour, Madeira Cottage. It’s straight off the main promenade and you let yourselves in via a hidden corridor leading into a bright, brand-new kitchen.

The bay windows take in sweeping views which one could be hypnotised by for hours – the beach busy with families in summer, children poking around in rockpools and waves lashing the Cobb in winter storms. Nestled up under the thatch on the top floor, a cosy bedroom with its own en suite, and tucked behind the house a small, shady and secluded terrace hidden away from the crowds and leading to a secret short cut to the Main Street.

Relax in a deck chair, potter over to the beach a few steps from the door, spend an afternoon browsing Lyme’s independent shops and delis, or join the Coast Path for spectacular view-filled walks.

Reviews

Centrally located in Lyme yet once inside the cottage it is a haven of tranquillity. There are lots of lovely features especially in the first floor sitting room, and with two bathrooms to choose from you would be spoilt for choice! It is impossible to be bored in Lyme Regis with so many lovely cafés, restaurants, shops and fossil hunting plus endless walking on the Jurassic Coast path.

A perfect location, warm and cosy beautifully presented cottage, interesting walks from the door, plenty to do…or not to do! Just look out of the window for entertainment. Thank you.

Third visit? Fortunate with good weather. Interesting fossil festival. May come again next year to this lovely cottage.

Maralyn, Kent

We spent a wonderful few days in this charming cottage, where all our needs were met, including a most comfortable bed. So therapeutic listening to the waves lapping the shingle beach. We will return. Thank you so much.

What a find Little Madeira is. A wonderfully positioned place and so comfortable. Had a lovely stay even though the weather was typically British-sunny one day and very stormy the next. This house provided great views of all the drama.

Location

The neighbourhood

The front door is steps away from the beach. There are some lovely places to eat – Lilac, Cibo deli and the Fish and Oyster Bar are favourites – as well as plenty of independent shops within a five or 10-minute walk. Join the Jurassic Coast path, visit the Dinosaur Museum and head down to Charmouth beach in search of fossils. Axminster station is five miles.
