The Experience

This lovely Georgian house is in the middle of the thriving town, on a quiet lane just off Market Place. Step in to warm colours, art, market finds and funny little nooks and crannies. There’s plenty of space, and Hilary and Tim have created an easy home you can share with friends and family.

Downstairs there’s a big sitting room (there’s another one upstairs for a quiet read and both have a great collection of books) with a wood-burner and comfy sofas. The dining room has a big sociable table; the kitchen has a two-oven stove, coffee machine and all you need to cook for a hungry hoard – you’re left prosecco and delicious local biscuits to settle you in.

Pretty bedrooms have well-dressed beds: two on the first floor and two up more stairs at the top of the house – each floor has a shared bathroom. Your garden is at the end of the lane, a sheltered patch for snoozes in the sun and snifters before dinner.

We had a great stay at the Old Red Lion over the new year break. The house is beautifully decorated and provides a lovely relaxed base for exploring Dorset. There's plenty of attention to detail, the kitchen is well equipped and everything was in working order. Hilary is an excellent host. We particularly enjoyed trips to the nearby coast for bracing walks, returning to enjoy a cosy evening by the log fire.

We had the most wonderful stay at Old Red Lion. The house itself is beautiful and so well maintained with everything in perfect working order. The log fire is such a treat on cold days. We went with our two children (3 and 1) who absolutely loved the house itself and the many adventures we had with lots of days out - there is so much to do in close proximity. Hilary communicated with us so well from the moment we booked and made sure we were completely comfortable and had everything we needed. We were even greeted with a very thoughtful basket of tea and treats. We plan on returning soon!

We arrived all 7 of us, to a beautiful home "Old Red Lion". A wonderful welcome pack , prosecco, heating was on, which made the house feel very cosy. The proximity to the town was less than a minute's walk. The attention to detail, White Company diffusers, fluffy towels and lovely top end range of bed linen was in every bedroom. The 2 bathrooms also a great advantage with 7 ladies !! We had the most wonderful stay celebrating a friends 60th birthday. The sitting room on the first floor was another relaxed chilled space. Hilary was an excellent host & we all hope to come back again one day !

What a wonderful weekend we’ve just enjoyed in The Old Red Lion House. A group of six adults just indulged in Hilary and Tim’s haven like hospitality for a weekend retreat in early January (what a way to kick the holiday blues). This stunningly, listed property in the centre of a sleepy market town allowed each of us to escape our hectic existence, wind down and relax for two days. Every touch is considered from the incredible welcome basket to the logs for the fire and board games. Located a short drive from the the exceptional Jurassic Coast, we would highly recommend. Location

The neighbourhood

Blandford Forum is considered to be one of the best-preserved Georgian market towns in the UK. The river Stour ambles gently along for some fabulous riverside walks. You can visit a brewery, shop at the weekly market, buy great local food and explore museums, eat at some excellent pubs and restaurants. The coast is just a 30-minute drive and inland the walking is sublime.

Local points of interest from Hilary & Tim Collins

  • The peaceful River Stour and lovely countryside walks are within a short distance from the house or if you're feeling energetic you can cycle along one of the trailways to one of the nearby pretty villages to enjoy a hard earned drink.
  • There are some great places to visit in Blandford Forum itself including the Fashion Museum, the charming Blandford Town Museum and its Victorian garden, and the Hall & Woodhouse brewery offers regular tours. All are just a short walk from the house.
  • With your stay at Old Red Lion you are spoilt for choice if you like eating out. Your hardest decision will be where to go; from pubs, restaurants and superb coffee shops, there is a great choice of places to dine and drink minutes from the house.
  • Market Place, in the centre of Blandford Forum, hosts the local market every Saturday with stalls, and the Georgian town hall, opening to sell food, clothing and handmade goods.
  • Blandford Forum offers easy access to all the fabulous things that Dorset has to offer, with Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Beauty just to the north and local towns such as Wimbourne, Dorchester and Salisbury a short drive away.
  • Alternatively travel south to enjoy Dorset's magnificent coastline with the natural harbour of Lulworth Cove, the stretching beaches of Studland, or the vibrancy of Poole harbour within easy reach for lazy summer ice creams or bracing winter walks.
