The Experience
Step inside to a bit of literary history – the inn was featured in Thomas Hardy’s Tess, as the Fleur de Luce. The 17th-century building now oozes charm: a huge brick fireplace with thick timbers, flagstone floors, flying hops, jugs of fresh flowers and plenty of hidden corners for plotting or making eyes at someone nice. Colourful soft furnishings give a contemporary touch.
From delicious breakfasts to hearty dinners, the menu champions the rich seam of ingredients grown, raised and locally made in Dorset. Expect some pub classics like handmade pies alongside comforting à la carte dishes. Sunday lunch is hugely popular and there are good real ales, craft beers and a nifty wine list.
Nothing has been forgotten in the charming bedrooms: cosy, simple, relaxed spaces with bright modern art, pretty fabric headboards, homemade cookies and fresh milk; en suite bathrooms have sustainable Land & Water soaps and lotions. All very nice indeed.
