The Experience

Through dappled woodland, down a drive swathed with wild flowers in spring to the most romantic, tucked away wooden retreat with stunning views over meadows dotted with Herdwick sheep. You’re quite alone and not overlooked so you’ll feel free as birds.Inside is warm, unfussy and welcoming with plenty of squishy seats, a sweet kitchen area with a warming Aga (lit in cooler months) and all the stuff even a demanding cook could need. Books, maps and a wood-burner with plenty of logs make rainy days happy too, so hunker down and plan your next outing.Bring bikes and join The Marshwood Vale which passes the top of the drive, explore Charmouth Forest with walking tracks in multiple directions, visit micro-breweries, gin distillers and vineyards, drive to Lyme Regis (12 minutes) for Hix oyster and fish. Beaches (10 minutes) are grand for fossil hunters, Burton Bradstock has the marvellous Hive Beach Cafe. Return to a sundowner on your veranda and watch the stars, and bats, come out.

Reviews

nicola, bristol

A really lovely, remote space for lovers, writers, wildlife seekers and walkers. It's cosy and homely inside with plenty of books for rainy days and much upcycled quirky stuff

Stuart, London

Our stay at the Hut surpassed expectation. The Hut itself is extremely comfortable and really well designed and built and it is positioned in a way that takes advantage of an simply incredible view. It was like going into a very comfortable and thoughtful home, and pretty much set up to enjoy an easy and comfortable stay in an idyllic spot. It is located in a very quiet and beautiful part of countryside, whilst being near many of the great places Dorset has to offer along the coastline. Will defiantly be returning again here and recommend very highly.

Sandra & John, YORK

Ideal location nicely tucked away in the beautiful Dorset countryside yet convenient for the Jurassic coast, Lyme and Bridport. The Hut was superbly positioned overlooking a lovely wooded valley across to an Iron Age hill fort. Cosy, very comfortable and an idyllic place to unwind - this would be an ideal location at any time of the year Very much looking forward to returning

david, west yorkshire

This cottage is in a beautiful rural location, if peace and solitude is your thing then The Hut is the place to stay. We had a fantastic week here and were blessed with sunshine from dawn till dusk. It has a well equipped kitchen, excellent rain shower, comfy bed, good wifi connection, and the views over the surrounding countryside are amazing. The Dorset coast is only a short drive away, with plenty to see and do. This is a unique property that creates a feeling of restfulness and warmth. Thank you Mark & Sue for an unforgettable holiday.

Patrick, Chester

My wife and I (and our 2 Dobermans) have stayed at the Dorset Hut many times and it is always such a wonderful experience. Mark is a great host and has created a unique environment which we will keep coming back too. We love the Aga and the wood burner and the feeling of being miles from anywhere. And finally its the amazing view that completes the experience. We are already planning our next stay

Location

The neighbourhood

You're well ensconced in Charmouth Forest here with walks in many directions – spot buzzards, deer, pheasant and sheep by day and badgers, foxes and bats at night. A mile up the road is Woodhouse Farm Stables for lovely hacks along bridle paths. There are plenty of good pubs nearby: Shaves Cross in the Marshwood Vale, the Anchor Inn at Seatown and the Harbour Inn at Lyme Regis one of many to enjoy. River Cottage HQ is worth a visit – some of their foraging courses take place in the forest at the top of the drive. You're near to pebble and sandy beaches for grand days out with a picnic.

Local points of interest from Susan & Mark Rogers

  • Excellent horse riding close by with Lee at Woodhouse Farm Riding Stables. All abilities welcome.
  • National Cycle Network at end of drive.
  • Fabulous local restaurants, including Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s River Cottage which also offers cookery courses and Mark Hix’s Oyster and Fish House.
  • The Marine Theatre and Seafishing at the Cobb, Lyme Regis.
  • Great walks straight from the door into beautiful Dorset countryside.
  • Good for bird watching & fossil hunting along the nearby Jurassic coast.

Introducing

Susan & Mark Rogers

Mark (who used to be a commercial pilot) and Sue (a delightfully friendly ex ward sister who bakes a mean Welsh cake) live a field away and through the trees, but they can't see you and you can't see them. They built the hut in 2012 having completed renovating their own home and it has been let out more or less continually ever since. They love sharing this special part of Dorset with the people who come to stay.
