The Experience

Imagine sitting in the shade on a hot summer’s day with a cool drink overlooking the bay, sunlight dancing across the water as far as the eye can see. Rolling hills shoot north towards Dorchester, while the view east follows Chesil Beach, 20 miles round to Portland Bill.

Sweet peas and roses tumble from table tops and torchères, walls of glass flood big rooms with light, and the bar offers treats to walk-weary dogs. After a day’s blast of sea air, come home to elegant paintings and Zoffany colours, books, games and snazzy cocktails, and bedrooms with far reaching sea views. As for the food, chef Seldon Curry delivers a daily-changing menu of imaginative modern classics and lovely local wines. The attention to detail is inspiring.

Small, sophisticated and serene, this so-called boarding house is the finest seaside bolthole in Dorset. You may need to book weeks in advance.

Reviews

How special can this place possibly be? From the clifftop position, breathtaking views from every room, the sophisticated and stylish interior, a lovely restaurant with modern classic food, a cocktail bar, library and nine sumptuous bedrooms with bathrooms ensuite. A perfect place to relax and unwind. This must be the most beautiful Seaside Boarding House in Dorset. A very special place.

Sarah, Sawday's Inspector

Every visit to the Seaside Boarding House is an exceptional experience. This was no exception! An exquisite dinner hosted by guest Chef Fergus Henderson. Convivial, generous, beautifully presented in gorgeous surroundings. The rooms are all lovely particularly those at the front which overlook the sea.

Location

The neighbourhood

The cliff-top setting offers breathtaking views to Chesil Beach, Portland, Weymouth, Lyme Regis and (just down the hill) West Bay. For dogs, walkers and kite-surfers the Jurassic coastline is a wonder and the South West Coastal Path passes right outside your door. Tuck into ocean-fresh fish under wind-strewn awnings at Hive Beach Café (a 5-minute stroll). Walk to the pubs in the village - Burton Bradstock. Fall in love with Bride Valley Vineyard, 5 miles.

Local points of interest from Mary-Lou Sturridge

  • Visit West Bay just down the road for fishing trips, Weymouth for faded regency façades and donkey rides with candy floss, and Abbotsbury for the famous swannery and sub-tropical gardens.
  • Guests wanting to sample local restaurants should look to Mark Hixʼs ʻOyster & Fish Houseʼ in Lyme Regis‘ ‘Brassica’ in Beaminster, The Parlour in Little Bredy or the Hive Café in the beach below.

Introducing

Mary-Lou Sturridge

Prior to opening the Seaside Boarding House in 2015, Mary-Lou was Managing Director of the Groucho Club in Soho, memorably described as 'the enfant terrible' of London's arty scene.
