The Experience

In summer you’ll be out on the terrace lounger or swinging in the lakeside hammock – the brave can plunge into the fresh water when they want to cool off and there’s a little rowing boat for pottering around in. Light the fire and feel cosy even when the weather is doing its worst – it’ll be dramatic viewing through the big windows.James’ clever design and handiwork make this small space very liveable. It’s just a few steps from the king-sized bed, through French windows onto the private terrace, and the kitchen is well equipped. Dip into the welcome hamper of local eggs, bread, fruit and a good bottle of French wine from the nearby farmshop. There are excellent markets and restaurants specialising in fish and other fresh local food in Lyme, Bridport, West Bay and Axminster. You could be out all day: foraging, walking, cycling, but do take time to listen and watch for woodpeckers, roe deer, owls…

Reviews

Such a wonderful stay in the store, youe own little world with everything you could want, including a stunning view of the lake and the rolling hills in the distance. So brilliant to be immersed in nature, with a walk in the woods on your doorstep and yet with every comfort you could need at your fingertips. We will be back !

Chiara, London

Love this place so much - and the weather could not have been better! We shall be back very soon! In brief: PERFECTION! :) PEACE - BEAUTY - CALM!

Think light, wood, warmth, water. A wonderful romantic retreat. This newly built cottage is small but beautifully designed with every comfort considered and lovely views from each big window. It would be a marvellous place to come back to after a day at the coast - to relax on the terrace or to sit in front of the woodburner; a cottage for all seasons of which the owner should be justifiably proud

Location

The neighbourhood

Contemplating its own lake in quiet countryside, Wellhouse is ten minutes’ drive (45 minutes’ walk) from Lyme Regis: fishing trips from the harbour within the famous cobb; fine food at Hix Oyster and Fish House; fabulous fossils on Monmouth Beach, pubs, independent shops. It’s three miles to the farmshop. 20 minutes’ drive to arty Bridport with its food and vintage markets; eight to Axminster (River Cottage is nearby); London by train two and a half hours; three by road.

Local points of interest from James Verner

  • A great place to stock up with local seasonal produce is Miller’s Farm Shop, four and a half miles to the west on the A35, where one can also find incredible cheese and charcuterie and French wine (the owners visit France every week).
  • Wellhayes is the perfect place to take advantage of beautiful walking and cycling. The owners have lived in the area all their lives and can advise on some fantastic routes both on and off road.
  • Dog owners can take advantage of a short circular route around the valley in the morning or something altogether more ambitious.
  • Throughout the year, the area hosts some world class cultural events: The Bridport Literary Festival, Dorset Art Weeks, Devon and Somerset Open Studios. As a centre of the organic farming movement, food events feature prominently on the annual calendar.
  • All the year ‘round, important gardens and homes are open to visitors, from Margery Fish’s garden at East Lambrook Manor, to Forde Abbey House and Gardens; a week wouldn’t be long enough to visit them all!
  • Whatever you plan to do during your stay, whether it's paragliding or cycling, to it’s well worth contacting James to see what’s going on or what he recommends.

Introducing

James Verner

The friendly Verners and their lurcher live in the Wellhouse and began the restoration and careful development of their chosen corner of rural Dorset in 2013. James grew up in the area and is a designer and furniture maker; his creativity makes their light-filled properties really stand out. They’ve poured energy into landscaping too and there are more plans in the pipeline. When Emma and James vacate the house, helpful housekeeper Kelly is on hand.
