The Experience

It’s a fabulous spot with excellent walking and cycling from the door and super views – the best of country and coast. Return to a cosy bar area with a log-burning stove, simple tables and chairs, board games and magazines, a chalkboard listing snacks. The dining room is light and airy, and you’re served well-cooked pub classics alongside more inventive dishes; meat is from Jurassic Coast Fine Foods and R J Balson’s of Bridport, venison from The Gamekeepers Larder and the freshest fish from Wright Brothers of Brixham.

Retire to well-dressed beds with feather and down, Nespresso coffee machines, fresh milk, books and a radio – all in soothing colours with good-sized Bramley-scented bathrooms. On balmy days you can have a pint of real ale in the garden, with views over the Somerset Levels – particularly lovely at sunset.

Explore quintessential Dorset villages, or head to the glorious Jurassic Coast and some fine beaches – West Bay is close.

Reviews

Run with passion and pride by hands-on family owners, who restored the fortunes of this hilltop inn back in 2021, it's worth seeking out for the fabulous views across Somerset and the enticing seasonal menus that combine hearty pub classics with more inventive dishes. Tucked away are six cosy, peaceful rooms with smart bathrooms and welcome detail touches. Glorious walking country – bring the dog.

Location

The neighbourhood

Find a tip-top network of footpaths from the door – view-filled walks will be hugely enjoyable (the Parrot Trail starts in Chard) and cyclists can enjoy fairly quiet roads. Keen gardeners can visit Mapperton Gardens, Forde Abbey and Montacute House; beachcombers will head to West Bay or Lyme Regis, shoppers to Dorchester, and fossil hunters to Charmouth Heritage Centre for guided fossil hunting.
