The Experience

Romantics and poets have long been visiting the Wye Valley for inspiration. You’ll come for the epic walks, beautiful landscapes and utter peace. This rustic cottage is kitted out for the whole family with space for six plus a child and a baby, so gather around the wood-burner for nights in after a day spent outdoors; it’s the perfect spot for kicking back with your favourite people.

Pick fresh herbs from the garden and cook up something delicious in the open-plan kitchen – there’s plenty of room to eat inside or out. Take the cider and local produce from your welcome hamper and pop over the lane to the meadow to sit and watch the sunset.

Head to the village shop just ten minutes away for picnic supplies. If the weather dampens enthusiasm for the outdoors, stoke the fire, take advantage of those comfortable sofas and say goodbye to the world for a few hours.

Great place for a weekend away. Lovely walks straight from the property without the need to drive. Beautiful surroundings and an overall great house.

Eva

Absolutely stunning property in the most idyllic and tranquil setting you cvould imagine. Extremely spacious interior, with log burner for those cosy evenings in. Fully equipped with all amenities and just the most beautiful and relaxing place. Will be booking again for sure - feel like I've found a gem right here! Thank you so much!

Joey

This is a truly enchanting place to stay. There are so many positives here: the location is perfect and the house is beautiful and supremely well-equipped. It is spacious with wonderful spaces to hang out together and also to be alone. Didn't want to leave!

Helen

Fairhaven surpassed my expectations in terms of spaciousness and quality of decor. The location is truly delightful though we didn't use our kayak/swim in the river by the cottage as it looked difficult to enter and fast flowing (though we did see kayakers at the weekend). We found the grassy pitch opposite the house easy to park our small car but the kerb was a little tricky in the driveway next to the house. Extras we didn't expect but really enjoyed were: the cold larder, plentiful books and magazines, gardens around the property. All in all an enchanting cottage.

Nellie

The house was beautiful inside and out. We had plenty of space to spread out and chill by ourselves, and nice big communal rooms that were comfy for spending time together. If you imagined something you might want or need you would be sure to find it already in the house. The 2nd garden area across the road was a great surprise. A lovely place to sit in the evening sunshine, watching and listening to the goldfinches, swifts and buzzards - and sooo many butterflies. The lovely welcome gift was very welcome indeed. And the milk etc for a cuppa on arrival was splendid. The location is fabulous.

Sharon

A beautiful, relaxing stay in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The cottage was well equipped and had everything we could need. We instantly felt relaxed in these stunning surroundings. Highly recommended. Thank you!

Carolyn

Wonderful stay and house. Thank you

Alison

A wonderful property, full of character and warm personality in an idyllic and convenient location. Perfect for walking, eating out, relaxing with stunning views. Loveliest property and break we have had for some time.

Claire

Absolutely loved this cottage. Every inch of this place is so well thought through and decorated with so much love. Very well equipped, lovely location and so many great walks around here! Will definitely be back!

Raghav

The most amazing cottage. Was truly delightful. Felt like we were in a fairy tale. Every single item in the cottage was so special and well thought through. Great location too, so close to the river and many walks close by. Views were amazing, quaint, quiet and calm. Would definitely come back.

Raghav

Absolutely beautiful place and really nicely renovated. It's very isolated which was exactly what we were after, but with footpaths down to the river and road access to all of the local wye valley attractions by car. Comfortable beds, immaculate bathrooms and brilliant kitchen. There is a very good village shop about a 25 min walk/ five min drive. It's more of a mini supermarket which sells nice local produce and has a cafe. We were there for three days, only thing to moan about was that we weren't there for long enough!

Fraser

Lovely place – the garden is perfect for exploring & easter egg hunts & drinking tea in the sun. Beautiful walks from the doorstep and the house itself is both rustic and well equipped – love that there are so many books and games too. We’ve stayed in a lot of places through Sawdays & this one is the best!

Harriet

Wish we could stay for longer – a beautiful retreat from the world! Loved the ferns, moss & lichens around here… and the river, birds & horses… beautiful spot. This house offers so many places to relax and enjoy it. Thank you!

What a place!!! We had an amazing Christmas! Beautiful cottage, beautiful scenery. Merry Christmas & Thank you!

We stayed in Fairhaven for three lovely days. It was very comfortable and spacious and we loved cooking in the wonderful kitchen! There is plenty to do nearby such as lovely walks along to river to Tintern Abbey or a stroll around Puzzlewood. I would thoroughly recommend a stay at Fairhaven and I will definitely book via sawdays again. We had a lovely welcome hamper and the house was extremely clean. I felt very comfortable that the house had been cleaned with Covid 19 in kind and we felt very safe there!

Diva, London/Manchester

Fairhaven is a pretty, well equipped, comfortable cottage down a quiet, narrow road. It was spotlessly clean when we arrived, with all Covid restrictions in place. The garden, although a bit unkempt, is charming and attracts a lot of wildlife. We saw deer most days and there was a badger around and lots of birds. There are lots of really lovely walks directly from the house and there are plenty of attractions a short drive away. We were sorry to leave. The property manager Emma is very helpful and responds promptly to emails.

Anne, Derbyshire

Lovely cottage in a wonderful location. Perfect for walks. We had a great weekend away.

Lucy, Lewes

We had a great stay at Fairhaven. The cottage was lovely and cosy for a winter break. Great local walks and scenery. The host was really responsive and helpful and left a lovely welcome hamper. Would thoroughly recommend.

Laura, Bristol

Ditch the car and spend your holiday walking, wild swimming and exploring all the area has to offer. A wonderfully rustic cottage with plenty of charm. Sit in the meadow and watch the sunset with a BBQ, pick herbs from the garden and explore the orchard. Families will have a great time here - it's all kitted out for children and there is plenty of room to roam with adults watching on.

Location

The neighbourhood

The River Wye is your friendly neighbour, stroll along its banks to reach the beautiful ruins of Tintern Abbey. 20 minutes by car and you’ll find plenty of spots to rent kayaks in Monmouth and launch yourself for a day exploring the river. A 10-minute ramble from the door (in spring make sure to take in the bluebell woods which surround the cottage) leads you to Brockweir - stock up on homemade cakes and pies from the community shop and cafe.

Local points of interest from Mary

  • Cook for family and friends in the large kitchen, barbeque outside, eat at a local pub or restaurant or wander to the nearby vineyard or Brewery.
  • Wild deer entice you to explore the woodland - enjoy autumn colours, mushroom picking, foraging, forest bathing, magic bluebell woods in Spring. Green lanes and ancient trackways lead to hidden cottages deep in the forest.
  • Gaze down on the river as swans glide past. Wander the banks of the Wye or take a train from Chepstow for a journey along the Severn. Harry Potter fans, head for the Cathedral cloisters. Lovers of the hop or vine, head for ancient galleried coaching inns.
  • History envelops you - Offas Dyke, the ghosts of Tintern monks, castles - Chepstow, Raglan and Goodrich or walk in the footsteps of the Romans at Caerwent and Caerleon. Visit the courts and prisoners' cells in Shire Hall in Monmouth.
  • Glorious gardens - our favourites are Dewstoke and Westbury Court. Breath-taking scenery in the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and Golden Valley. Or stay put and enjoy the beauty of the valley, fall asleep in the meadow counting butterflies.
  • Lots for little ones: Puzzlewood, Clearwell Caves, the miniature railway and tea rooms at Tintern Old Station, Go Ape in the forest or the open air lido in Lydney. Big Pit and our personal favourite St Fagins open air museum are further afield.

Introducing

Mary

Mary and her family have called the Wye Valley home for two decades. They escape city life in Bristol for weekends of muddy walks and river swims. Starting the day with a dip and ending it with a drink in the meadow seems like the perfect tonic to urban life. They’ve spent 20 years lovingly restoring the cottage with traditional building techniques and eco-features. You can tell this is a family cottage; children are prioritised with plenty of books and games.
