Once the summer haunt of William Morris, the rural village of Kelmscott was to him “a heaven on earth”, and many today might well agree. Resolutely bucolic, it’s the perfect spot for a few nights’ break, to walk, tour the area, pop into town, or simply snooze away an afternoon on the banks of the Thames. It’s also a place for foodies, who come for owner-chef Sebastian Snow’s distinctive dishes: quail’s eggs or monkfish, scampi and chips served in the bar, or ‘mallard two ways’ followed by dark rum and chocolate mousse in the restaurant.  Real ales and wines by the glass or carafe feature on a worldly drinks menu. The old Cotswold stone building doesn’t disappoint either, replete with flagstones, scrubbed pine tables, exposed beams and cosy corners. There are roaring fires in the winter and a garden for summer. Linger a while and make a day of it, or stay longer: there are eight elegant bedrooms in muted tones, most with king size beds and all with stylish en suites. Start the day with a fulsome breakfast served in the restaurant. Parking can be a little tricky at busy times, but perseverance and patience pay.
