The Experience

This is a grand spot for a few nights’ break, to walk, tour the area, pop into town, or simply snooze away an afternoon on the banks of the Thames. It’s also a place for foodies, who come for a nostalgic menu featuring British classics and hearty favourites. Three hand-pumped ales and wines by the glass or carafe feature on a worldly drinks menu.

The old Cotswold stone building doesn’t disappoint either, replete with flagstones, scrubbed pine tables, exposed beams and cosy corners. There are roaring fires in the winter and a garden for summer. Find eight elegant but cosy bedrooms with William Morris fabrics and wallpapers, super beds topped with thick duvets and crisp covers, and indulgent bathrooms with Branch & Olive soaps and lotions.

Dine privately in The Gin Pantry, wake to super breakfasts (outdoors on balmy days), wander over to Kelmscott Manor for much beauty in house and garden, or take a stroll along the river – it’s dreamy.

Reviews

A picture-perfect 17th-century inn secluded away in an idyllic village, just a stroll from the river Thames and Kelmscott Manor, former home of Arts & Crafts designer William Morris. Refurbished in cool, rustic style, it's worth seeking out for good pub food, stylishly simple rooms, the peaceful cottage garden in summer, and the blazing log fire in the cosy bar following a winter walk.
