The Experience

The bar is the characterful hub of this vibrant inn: chunky beams, flagstone floors, exposed stone walls and a vast fireplace with logs aglow make for a warm and happy entry, with a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Tuck into a bar snack and a pint of something local while you check out the menu – proper, simple food, cooked well and with a menu that changes regularly. In summer you can enjoy it all on the sheltered terrace surrounded by pots of olive and box.

There are two stylish snugs away from the bar, both with wood-burning stoves and plenty of coffee table books, so perfect for working or reading quietly. Bedrooms (upstairs and on the ground floor) are spacious and sumptuous, some with their own terrace, some with copper tubs, but all with plenty of storage, big well-dressed beds and smart TVs. Those in the extension are smaller but similar in layout.

Set off on glorious walks through the Cotswolds, return to an aromatherapy massage or facial. A treat.

Reviews

New life has been breathed into this iconic, beautifully restored Cotswolds pub following seven years of closure. In tiny Ewen, close to Cirencester, seek it out for drinks by the fire in the time-honoured bar, then tuck into elevated pub food in the cosy beamed dining room, before retiring to a gorgeous bedroom, the biggest and best above the pub, all oozing style and welcome detail touches.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're set back from a lane in the village of Ewen, close to Cotswold Water Park and Cirencester. There's a lot to do locally: padel, fly fishing, clay pigeon shooting, e-bike and guided walking tours, visiting Westonbirt Arboretum or Kelmscott Manor for a lovely garden. Highgrove and Blenheim Palace are nearby for a day out, there is horse riding, and Kemble Station is just 1.5 miles.

Local points of interest from Sam & Georgina Pearman

  • The source of the Thames and so the very start of the Thames Path is about 5 minutes away.
  • We are about 5 minutes from Cirencester – known as the capital of the Costwolds and a beautiful place to while away a few hours.
  • Our assistant manager Andrea is also a beekeeper and, if the bees are behaving, will be providing his very own honey for breakfast.
  • Corinium Museum in Cirencester makes for a fascinating outing, housing one of the finest Roman collections in the country.
