The Experience

The whole Woodchester property is impressive and this handsome self-catering house, at the lower end of the estate has an especially tranquil feel, and a very high-spec kitchen. A modern build in traditional Cotswold stone, with beautiful fabrics and locally made furniture, its big windows bring in masses of light; you needn’t get up from your bed to enjoy the views.

Gail will gladly set up a tour of the vineyards and a tasting – you may choose a house Pinot rosé or a sparkling wine to have with dinner around the generous table; or outside around the barbecue. Two sitting rooms, three wood-burners, books and games make this a flexible, comfortable space for groups to share at any time of year.

Walk to Nailsworth with its shops and eateries, in half an hour or so. Shop at Stroud’s weekly market. Bath and Cheltenham are under an hour’s drive.

Reviews

What an amazing place to stay! Fantastic views, beautifully furnished and a lovely welcome hamper of local produce. Great communication from the very helpful team beforehand made everything very easy. Particularly liked the outside space and kitchen-dining area, as well as the large and well-appointed bedrooms. We hope to return one day!

Woodchester Valley House was a first-class experience. A beautiful house set in an amazing location overlooking the vineyards. Views are breath taking. We were welcomed by lovely Gail who is a brilliant host and a mouth-watering welcome hamper on arrival with all the local produce. The house itself is spacious and super- comfortable- everything is just so perfectly placed. The bedrooms are beautifully furnished, and the bathrooms had everything you needed. The wine tasting tour was fun and knowledgeable. Looking forward to revisiting this place again soon.

What a lovely place this is! The house is so tastefully decorated and feels rather grand. I can imagine bringing a group of friends here, cooking up a storm for dinner every night and eating it together along the huge table. A bonus is being on the vineyard and it's great that you can do a tasting and find out exactly how the wine is being produced!

Location

The neighbourhood

There are many great walks across this part of the Cotswolds. You can join the Cotswold Way from behind the vineyard, the Laurie Lee Wildlife Way is a six-mile circular walk across the Slad Valley and there’s a canal towpath walk – or bike ride - from Stroud to Stonehouse. Nailsworth has heaps of good places to eat – a five-minute drive or 30-minute walk on a public footpath across fields. Stroud is not much further and has a lively Saturday market, bookshops and cafes. Westonbirt is a 15-minute drive, Cirencester 20 minutes – Bristol and Bath not much further.

Local points of interest from Gail Shiner

  • The house is located on a vineyard with a winery, tours and tastings are available on select dates, a short stroll from the accommodation. The Cellar Door shop where wines can also be tasted and purchased is open Tues-Sat 10am-6pm on the A46.
  • Woodchester valley vineyard is situated just 1,5 miles from the market town of Nailsworth. This thriving little town has a wide variety of shops and a great array of excellent restaurants, bars and pubs.
  • Stroud is brimming with independent shops and cafés and home to one of the best Farmers’ Markets (Saturday mornings) in the country, there are plenty of things to do in Stroud, described by Jasper Conran as ‘the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’.
  • Woodchester Mansion just down the road, this Grade 1 listed Victorian Gothic style mansion was famously left unfinished when the family ran out of money in the 1870s. It was used as an army training ground in WWll.
  • The Cotswold Way. Offering 102 miles (164 KM) of magical discovery through the western edge of the Cotswold. From walking through picturesque villages to taking in the stunning views from the Cotswold escarpment, this is a must for walkers.
  • We are ideally located as a base to explore the Cotswolds and the towns of Cirencester, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Bristol are all within a 45 minute drive or less.

Introducing

Gail Shiner

Fiona Shiner grew up in Gloucestershire, spent 17 years in Hong Kong and then came back to settle in the South Cotswolds. Woodchester Valley has three vineyards, planted in 2007-2013, and includes areas where winemaking is recorded in the Doomsday book of 1086. The family-run vineyard now has 45 acres across the three sites, growing a range of different grape varieties. Their award-winning wines include white, rosé and sparkling. Fiona and Gail, her sister-in-law who looks after the guests, live nearby.
