The Experience

The village of Newland in the heart of the Wye Valley is the perfect spot for a country getaway, it’s deliciously rural but you’re close to heaps of outdoorsy stuff, it has a superb pub, The Ostrich, and a rather fabulous Georgian house, resplendent in coral pink, where you stay. The interior designer owners have lavished love and attention on the property and brought it screaming back to life.

Inside, two apartments sleep two and the third sleeps four. All are bright, bold and delightfully comfy; expect smart linens on spoiling beds, luxury bathrooms and top-of-the-range kitchens. Nespresso machines for early-morning coffee, WiFi for planning your adventures and Smart TV for rainy days.

The Wye Valley is waiting to be explored, hire canoes or kayaks and cruise down the river Wye, walk Offa’s Dyke path, cycle everywhere. Gather on the sunny terrace for an apéritif then stroll to the pub in the village for a hearty supper.

Reviews

I purposely took the scenic route to this inspection - situated in the Wye Valley AONB you can imagine the glorious autumnal colours on the way. This Grade-II Georgian property nestled within sheltered woodlands has been brought back to its former glory by its interior designer owners. The fabulous décor and furnishings are a true reflection of their creativity and flair. Each space is meticulously designed, ideal for those who want to enjoy a carefully considered space as well as explore all the Wye Valley has to offer.

Nicole, Sawday's Inspector

I was lucky to be shown around all 3 Apartments. I wanted to book them for some wedding guests as my daughter was getting married at Newland church. Raymond was very easy to communicate with as there were a couple of change overs during our rental and he even reunited a couple of the guest with their left belongings! Feed back from the guests was very positive and welcomed the extras goodies that were in the rooms. Raymond and Neil have worked very hard to produce a wonderful place to relax and unwind in the tranquil village of Newland. Nothing is too much trouble. Highly recommended.

Location

The neighbourhood

Newland village, sometimes called The Chelsea of the Forest, is set in a lovely sheltered valley. Monmouth (15 minutes) has a Waitrose, M&S Foodhall, independent shops and cafés. Visit Symonds Yat, hire canoes or kayaks for a trip down the Wye River. Play golf, cycle, hope onto Offa's Dyke walking path in nearby Redbrook; visit the Clearwell Caves and Cyril Hart Arboretum in Coleford.

Local points of interest from Raymond & Neil

  • The Ostrich Inn, only a 5-minute walk is a charming and ancient pub with a roaring fire and a warm welcome to all including dogs, families, cyclists, walkers. Boasting local ales, ciders and a gourmet menu it has a garden and charming views of the church.
  • All Saints Church, Newland, traditionally and affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Forest, dates back to the early 1200s. A beautiful building and a peaceful spot to explore, full of interesting tombs and artefacts. Services listed on its website.
  • The Village Shop Brockweir & Hewelsfield, has a wide variety of every day essentials, fresh and frozen foods and are licensed to sell alcohol and have a range of gifts available. The Cafe has indoor and outdoor seating with lovely views down the valley.
  • The Forest Deli Coleford a brilliant delicatessen with lots of local and foreign cheese, charcuterie, gourmet foods, snacks and nibbles, local wines, beers, ciders, spirits. Order online and have it delivered for your stay.
  • Well worth a visit the ruins of Raglan Castle the grandest ever built by a Welshman. A spectacular ruin with a moated Great Tower of 1435 that still dominates this mighty fortress-palace and it once had one of the finest Renaissance gardens in Briton.
  • Woofield is on the walking map with 4 or more loop walks 4-5km, longer/shorter if you want, a brief walk on a quiet lane and you are into the hills, forests and valleys with opportunities to end up at pubs including The Boat Inn Redbrook "over in Wales".

Introducing

Raymond & Neil

Raymond and Neil are both interior designers – Neil in particular has specialised in international small luxury hotels, apartments and holiday spaces for 25 years, and his eclectic and textured style shines through in their own apartments. Wanting to leave London, it took them a long time to find the right place, and it needed a lot of love. They’re now the fourth owners of this Grade-II 1690 property and only used local tradespeople (the furthest came from Monmouth) to bring the house back to its former glory. They live on-site but you'll be given a key and left to be self-sufficient.
