The Experience

The bar floor has been worn by centuries of ramblers thirsty for a pint, and these days the 17th-century inn serves three hand-pumped Butcombe ales. Arrive early for a chair by the log fire or seek out a cosy nook. From the wisteria-framed terrace, watch children play safely in the paddock.

In the lodge, cosy rooms have good linen, fat cushions, radios and real coffee with fresh milk. Some have a shower, others a bath. Take the suite for a sofa to lounge on and a huge walk-in shower. The private terrace is screened by frothing flower beds in summer.

Wander through the forest spotting wild ponies or explore miles of bike trails from the door. Try the wines at Setley Ridge Vineyard, or award-winning cheeses at Lyburn Farmhouse. Eat freshly cooked pub classics and hearty pies or New Forest venison and wild boar in season.

Reviews

Former 17th-century lodge lost down a track in the heart of the New Forest where ponies saunter by and pigs forage in the woods opposite. Isolated in seven acres, with fabulous forest and heathland walks from the door, it's often mobbed in summer, but a real hideaway in winter, with seven peaceful rooms and a cosy bar with roaring fire to retreat to following an invigorating ramble.
