The Experience

Inside is open and airy while still having a clubby feel: art is of the huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’ variety along with many portraits of the Iron Duke himself – he lived nearby in Stratfield Saye House. Find a modern bar with traditional draft beers (some from their own brewery) a lounge-like seating area with comfy chairs and club tables, then a huge dining area which is full-on country house. Meat is from Aubrey Allen, fish from Brixham and wines from Bibendum – the cooking style is modern and eclectic.

You breakfast on eggs from Cornwall, Laverstoke Park black pudding, Severn & Wye smoked salmon, eggs Benedict and Florentine, and there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Take a newspaper to the lounge afterwards or plan your next adventure. Bedrooms, six in the main house, the others in a separate annexe, are scented with jasmine candles and have minibars and Belgian chocolates.

Wellington Farm Shop and café is just down the road.
