The Experience

The Black Mountains are the backdrop to your Herefordshire retreat: this converted bakehouse has all a couple need to escape city life. Inside, tones are neutral, with wheat coloured carpets and soft fabrics in the living room to set off the dark beams above, and a wood-burner stacked with logs. The kitchen isn’t huge but it is well-equipped (and you’ll find some generous basics along with handmade chocolates and local Welsh cakes), so pad through to the conservatory with a coffee, or step out to the sunny garden – both are great birdwatching spots. Two meadows lie just beyond, the start of many footpaths that criss-cross the countryside; the river Monnow meanders by too. The energetic Jones’ use the old mill owner’s house at weekends but otherwise the cottage stands in peaceful seclusion. After a day spent in bookish Hay-on-Wye, a windswept trek on Offa’s Dyke or a drink in the local pub you can head upstairs and collapse into your big zip-link double, with its fresh linen and pretty view to the garden. The award-winning village shop can sell you a fishing licence and there’s plenty of space for storing bikes.

Reviews

Geoff, Chipping Norton, West Oxfordshire

The owners were very friendly and informative without being at all intrusive, it was lovely to hear a bit more about the history of the mill. The cottage itself was really lovely with a log fire for the cooler evenings and a plentiful supply of wood. The cottage was spacious, well furnished and very clean and the fresh garden flowers added a real charm. A thoroughly enjoyable stay with plenty to do in the area. We would thoroughly recommend staying here.

Elizabeth, Malvern, Worcs

We had a lovely stay. The cottage is well-equipped and has excellent decor. The large garden, orchard and river area are lovely to walk around. Good to have a village shop and pub only a few minutes walk away. Had some enjoyable games of croquet with the friendly owners!

Colin, Worcestershire

An absolutely wonderful week at the cottage. Weather was fantastic, which enabled us to spend so much time outdoors enjoying the expansive beautiful grounds, which abound with bird life .. cottage is well equipped, lovely welcome hamper and flowers from the garden in every room.. a most wonderful stay and hope to return.

Andrew & Sue, Bristol

Our fourth stay at MRC. Garden as pretty as ever, as are the flower meadows. Quality bed linen is lovely to sink into after a day walking the hills. Our one rainy day was a blessing in disguise, as it gave us an excuse to sit in the sun-room and read, free from any guilt that we weren't out walking. We also indulged ourselves with a log fire. Wi-fi seems much improved this year.

Janet and Colin, Blackpool

Amazing cottage in such a beautiful location. Well equipped with everything needed for a very relaxing holiday. Tivy and Steve are excellent hosts-the welcome pack and the fresh flowers were the icing on the cake!
