The Experience

There’s a wonderfully secluded feel as you come down the long drive to your green escape in pretty grounds with colourful planting, ponds and wildflower meadows.

You have this three-roomed cob house to yourself and one of the great things about kind owners living next door is breakfast… delivered to the sitting room or veranda. Go continental or full English – both star local produce – and Aga porridge is on the menu too.

Patient watchers may see roe deer, badgers, perhaps a hare. Walkers can head straight out of the gate and onto the 154-mile Herefordshire Trail; or simply stroll to one of the local pubs for lunch. There’s the river Wye and Hay’s bookshops, and more, to visit. When owls are hooting and the day is nearly done, train the telescope on dark night skies before turning in to sleep deeply under a fine feather duvet.

Reviews

Thank you Lynn and Simon for a wonderfully relaxing weekend. Thank you for making us feel so welcome and for treating us to such delicious food and drink. We were absolutely thrilled to try your homemade apple juice squeezed only the day before. The Cob is a truly special place with such character and set amongst beautiful and abundant nature. We feel so blessed to have been able to stay here. Thanks you so much for sharing your home with us and for your warmth and hospitality. We gratefully appreciated all your thoughtful personal touches and look forward to visiting again.

A truly magical place. Beautiful and tranquil. Simon and Lynn have created a great experience. The chance to sit out on the veranda more or less whatever the weather is special. Lynn and Simon are exceptional hosts.

We had such a lovely weekend in this beautiful place. Simon and Lynn made us feel completely at home in their stunning B&B and ensured we had everything we needed for the duration of our stay, we couldn't have asked for better hosts. The Cob is extremely cosy and clean, well-furnished and the wood burner was great. Breakfast choice was fantastic and having this on the veranda each morning was a perfect way to start the day surrounded by nature. It is such a great location for many lovely walks, activities and various country pubs - a must stay for anyone visiting this area to relax and unwind.

Mary & Kane, London

What an amazing place! The building, surroundings, views are incredible and The Cob is left immaculately clean before before and throughout the stay. Lynn and Simon are wonderful people, happy to do anything to make your stay enjoyable. You can tell they have put their heart and soul into making The Cob a truly special place to stay and enjoy. Breakfasts are immense. We tried everything during our stay! Days out included a trip to Talybont-on-Usk and lovely 3 mile walk along the canal to the next village. Thanks so much Lynn and Simon, we will definitely return xx

We had a great stay at The Cob, despite very wet and windy weather. The location in 4 acres of grounds is idyllic and peaceful and there is varied and abundant wildlife to watch - buzzard, kites, deer and bats, to name just a few. The property is stylish, beautifully decorated and comfortable. The hosts are very friendly, capable and efficient. Loved the breakfasts, fresh ingredients, locally sourced where possible. This was the most enjoyable B&B stay we've had and we've been doing them for 45+ years!

Thank you for providing such a Garden Eden in these crazy and scary times. We loved sitting on your deck and enjoyed the spectacle of nature in front of us. An appreciate of cider that we did not have before...

We had a wonderful time at The Cob. The local area is stunning! We could not have been made more welcome. Lynn & Simon were so friendly and their thoughtfulness and attention to detail was second to none. We'll definitely be back and will recommend to friends and family. We're off to climb the magnificent Hay Bluff now. If you've not been before, I recommend it!

James & Tam, Bristol

Simon and Lyn are delightful hosts and have created a gorgeously quirky and comfortable cob house for you to stay in. Potter around the beautiful gardens, watch the wildlife or the stars from the veranda and relax!

Location

The neighbourhood

You arrive to birdsong and often kites sweeping overhead; the only other property visible is your wildlife-friendly hosts’. The Herefordshire Trail runs adjacent to the house; it’s 20 minutes’ walk to The Rhydspence or The Boat Inn – with a farm shop and café opposite. Bookish Hay with its range of other shops and eateries, is five miles; Hereford station is 18.

Local points of interest from Simon & Lynn Woodward

  • Only ten minutes away, Hay-on-Wye, our nearest town famous for it’s bookshops and festival has a lot more to offer; independent shops, Galleries, and antique shops aplenty. There is a market every Thursday with local produce and crafts on sale.
  • For a great day out, drive or cycle The Black and White Village Trail, a forty mile circular route through the peaceful Herefordshire countryside, stopping off for beautiful views, tea shops, churches, gardens and more.
  • A great base for walking, we are situated on The Herefordshire Trail, a 150 mile loop of Herefordshire, and around a mile from Offa’s Dyke Path. The Brecon Beacons an Black Mountains are only a short drive away.
  • The towns of Leominster and Brecon and the City of Hereford are within half an hour’s drive.
  • We love Talgarth Mill, a fully restored 18th century flour mill powered by the River Ellywe. Take a tour, then enjoy lunch in The Baker’s Table Cafe and wander through the gardens.
  • Kington Golf Club, the highest in England with it’s panoramic views is only five miles away.

Introducing

Simon & Lynn Woodward

The Woodwards’ dream of renovating a property for guests has taken great shape at The Cob. They moved here in 2019, having sold their bathroom design business in Cheshire, and their passion for the project and for sharing the results makes them ideal hosts. They’re re-wilding parts of the surrounding land, are just across the way if you need anything and happy to leave you in peace if you don’t.
