The Experience

There’s a wonderfully secluded feel as you come down the long drive to your green escape in pretty grounds with colourful planting, ponds and wildflower meadows.

You have this three-roomed cob house to yourself and one of the great things about kind owners living next door is breakfast… delivered to the sitting room or veranda. Go continental or full English – both star local produce – and Aga porridge is on the menu too.

Patient watchers may see roe deer, badgers, perhaps a hare. Walkers can head straight out of the gate and onto the 154-mile Herefordshire Trail; or simply stroll to one of the local pubs for lunch. There’s the river Wye and Hay’s bookshops, and more, to visit. When owls are hooting you can sneak to the shepherd’s hut with a fire pit on the decking and train the telescope on dark night skies.

Thank you for another glorious weekend retreat at The Cob. Yet again you have spoilt us with your hospitality, delicious breakfasts and sublime surroundings. We have no doubt that this is only the second visit of many yet to come.

We have both loved our first visit to The Cob. thank you Lynn and Simon for your wonderful hospitality, delicious breakfasts and very comfortable accommodation. We Relished the peace and tranquility and the frequent visits of the Deer. Unforgettable!

Gwyneth and Adrian, Nottingham

Lynn and Simon were perfect hosts and made us feel at home in their wildlife haven. The cob house is tastefully decorated to provide everything you need whilst retaining all the character of this unique place. Hay is just down the road if you want to pop out, though if you’re like us you’ll never want to leave. It was the ideal break away from the city - we look forward to going back!

What an absolutely fantastic and outstanding gem! We enjoyed a relaxing few days at The Cob, perfectly hosted by Lynn and Simon. Wonderful breakfasts and many hours spent enjoying the beautiful garden from the Verandah. This was our first visit to Herefordshire and there is so much to do here, and we plan to come back and stay at The Cob

Les, Lutterworth

It has been one of the best stays we have experienced. Lynn and Simon offer an exceptional and personalised service. The facilities are amazing. we slept so well, ate well and enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the grounds. the garden is beautiful. There is so much attention to detail that makes this place feel like home from home. We look forward to returning.

Meng and Chris, London

One of the best B&B's we've ever stayed in. Beautiful tranquil setting, with breakfasts outside on the veranda overlooking the gorgeous garden (lovingly tended by Lynn). The Cob was very well set up, with a separate sitting room. Extremely comfortable bed. Lynn and Simon couldn't have been more welcoming and we enjoyed our chats with them very much. Simon had some very helpful suggests for walks in the area. Buddy, their cockerpoo, was great. We very much hope to visit again.

Anna, Hampton

What a truly wonderful place you have created here! We have loved wandering around the meadows, sitting in the shepherd's hut and relaxing on the Verandah, watching the Kites, Buzzards, Woodpeckers and Nuthatch-to name a few. each night we have seen a deer emerge from the woodland to graze on the new shoots - just magical! The attention to detail is really impressive and you have been exceptional hosts. Thank you so much we will be back next year.

Tim and Ann, Cheltenham

Thank you so much for sharing your uniquely special corner of bliss. We have thoroughly enjoyed staying at The Cob and feeling comfortably relaxed and spoiled. Stepping out of the gate to the local walks has been a delight. Would love to experience it all again at another time of year, so will be back!

Judy & Mike, Bristol

This is the second time we've stayed at The Cob. Lynn and Simon are excellent hosts. The accommodation is outstanding, spotless and well equipped. We love sitting on the terrace overlooking the beautiful garden and listening to the birdlife. You could not find a more tranquil place to stay, we are looking forward to our next visit.

Ian, Bath

We have had the absolute best time here, just wish it had been longer- but there's always next year to look forward to! Thank you so much for a wonderful stay, you have been so kind, helpful and friendly. The Cob is now up there as one of our most favourite places, we love what you have done here. So tranquil and beautiful in all respects.

Judy & Jon, Farmington

After reading about The Cob in a Times supplement we emerged from Lockdown to tranquility! We have loved the simplicity of sitting on The Cob Veranda and listening to the many different birds, and wandering down to the delightful shepherd's hut in the evenings to sit by the fire pit to enjoy a peaceful sunset. The Cob is lovingly furnished and every need accommodated for.

Hazel & Alex, Sawbridgeworth

Breakfast on the Veranda, walks and walks, the comfiest bed in the world, peaceful position, this has been the best way to emerge from the Covid lockdown. Thank you so much

Annabel & Andy, Bath

The best bed and breakfast we have ever stayed in. The Cob is a beautiful property, fully equipped, stylishly and tastefully decorated, warm, cosy and quiet. Sitting on the veranda wrapped in warm rugs with a morning coffee watching and listening to the birds is one of the great pleasures of life. The hosts could not have been more helpful or accommodating. The breakfasts were wonderful. Waking up to views over the garden with the leaves turning autumnal colours, just wow! The Cob is secluded but there is plenty to do nearby. We look forward to visiting again soon.

Ian, Bath

A truly magical place. Beautiful and tranquil. Simon and Lynn have created a great experience. The chance to sit out on the veranda more or less whatever the weather is special. Lynn and Simon are exceptional hosts.

Helen & Steve, Rochdale

We had such a lovely weekend in this beautiful place. Simon and Lynn made us feel completely at home in their stunning B&B and ensured we had everything we needed for the duration of our stay, we couldn't have asked for better hosts. The Cob is extremely cosy and clean, well-furnished and the wood burner was great. Breakfast choice was fantastic and having this on the veranda each morning was a perfect way to start the day surrounded by nature. It is such a great location for many lovely walks, activities and various country pubs - a must stay for anyone visiting this area to relax and unwind.

Mary & Kane, London

We had a great stay at The Cob, despite very wet and windy weather. The location in 4 acres of grounds is idyllic and peaceful and there is varied and abundant wildlife to watch - buzzard, kites, deer and bats, to name just a few. The property is stylish, beautifully decorated and comfortable. The hosts are very friendly, capable and efficient. Loved the breakfasts, fresh ingredients, locally sourced where possible. This was the most enjoyable B&B stay we've had and we've been doing them for 45+ years!

The neighbourhood

You arrive to birdsong and often kites sweeping overhead; the only other property visible is your wildlife-friendly hosts’. The Herefordshire Trail runs adjacent to the house; it’s 20 minutes’ walk to The Rhydspence or The Boat Inn – with a café opposite. Bookish Hay with its range of other shops and eateries, is five miles; Hereford station is 18.

Local points of interest from Simon & Lynn Woodward

  • Only ten minutes away, Hay-on-Wye, our nearest town famous for it’s bookshops and festival has a lot more to offer; independent shops, Galleries, and antique shops aplenty. There is a market every Thursday with local produce and crafts on sale.
  • For a great day out, drive or cycle The Black and White Village Trail, a forty mile circular route through the peaceful Herefordshire countryside, stopping off for beautiful views, tea shops, churches, gardens and more.
  • A great base for walking, we are situated on The Herefordshire Trail, a 150 mile loop of Herefordshire, and around a mile from Offa’s Dyke Path. The Brecon Beacons an Black Mountains are only a short drive away.
  • The towns of Leominster and Brecon and the City of Hereford are within half an hour’s drive.
  • We love Talgarth Mill, a fully restored 18th century flour mill powered by the River Ellywe. Take a tour, then enjoy lunch in The Baker’s Table Cafe and wander through the gardens.
  • Kington Golf Club, the highest in England with it’s panoramic views is only five miles away.

Introducing

Simon & Lynn Woodward

The Woodwards’ dream of renovating a property for guests has taken great shape at The Cob. They moved here in 2019, having sold their bathroom design business in Cheshire, and their passion for the project and for sharing the results makes them ideal hosts. They’re re-wilding parts of the surrounding land, are just across the way if you need anything and happy to leave you in peace if you don’t.
