The Experience

Beamed ceilings are ten a penny over here in Herefordshire, but not the original medieval ones. Peta and Ivo’s renovation of The Hyde is nothing short of spectacular, letting the building’s lengthy history sing through its auction-sourced antiques, wonky ceilings and meat hooks protruding (safely) from the kitchen ceiling. All generations will relish the opportunity to explore all the nooks and crannies both inside and out.

You’ll have the whole place to yourself – the main house, and the cottage across the courtyard with four extra bedrooms if the space is needed. A veritable army of helpers are used to fulfil all manner of requests, including delicious food ready to put in the oven or a wander down to Native – the restaurant on the estate.

The best quirk can be found in the garden: for an extra charge you can chug around the grounds through stations, steam billowing through tunnels and viaducts on the narrow gauge railway.

Reviews

The Hyde is glorious, heavy with beams, good taste and space – a triumph of devoted restoration. I spent two nights there with a group of friends and would gladly go again.

Alastair, Bristol

We stayed at the Hyde for a week for a family gathering, 14 of us, although we had hoped for 4 more of our family to come too. We had the most fabulous week. The houses are wonderful - ancient, but with all modern conveniences. Every single bedroom was lovely. The house was well maintained and extraordinarily clean for such an old property. Facilities were second to none, with plenty of outside space for croquet, rounders, penalty shoot-outs. The hot tub was cleaned regularly. We had great fun on the lake with inflatables we'd brought. I highly recommend this place - worth every penny.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Hyde is a Grade II listed medieval hall house on the beautiful Herefordshire-Worcestershire border. Pheasant and guinea fowl roam the gardens, there’s a stocked trout lake and you can book a ride on the steam train at an extra cost. The Herefordshire countryside rolls out as far as the eye can see.The nearest towns of Tenbury Wells and Bromyard have a choice of pubs (five miles); Ludlow or the Malvern Hills are both around 30 minutes’ drive away, Hay-on-Wye just under an hour.
