The Experience

It’s a delightful surprise, after weaving through suburban Margate, to discover this spectacular 13th-century monastic grange set within a fragrant two acre garden. An ancient door and original mullion windows lead to grand, wood-beamed interiors.

Your hosts embraced the traditional charm – oak herringbone floors, chunky beams, inglenook fireplaces – and enlivened the look with bold wallpapers, smart lighting, vintage finds and modern art. Two sitting rooms, cosy with squishy sofas, and four generous en suite bedrooms dressed in Belgian linen and soft cotton, give you space to stretch out. All will love the heated pool and children will be happy clambering in the playground.

Henry whips up smoothies, and a cooked or continental breakfast with sourdough and pastries from award-winning local bakeries. Then, it’s a 15 minute stroll into Margate for the seafront, Turner Contemporary, indie bookshops and good places to eat. Or take your chances with the gulls and tuck into fish and chips on the beach.

Reviews

This is like no other place I have seen, but in a good way. Set in a large two-acre plot dominated by this 13th-century flint and stone Monastic Grange, complete with its own chapel. Step inside and the feeling is grand and so comfortable with large squishy sofas and plenty of oak beams. Bedrooms are all new with colourful walls and amazing comfortable bedding and bathrooms. All extremely high standard.

We stayed at Salmestone Grange for four nights as a family of four and can't recommend it highly enough. Jenny and Henry were extremely welcoming, kind and helpful, going above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The rooms are lovely - generously sized, with extremely comfortable beds and delicious breakfasts. The pool was excellent for our children, along with the garden and play equipment to play with. The B&B is in a great location for Margate and exploring west Kent and Jenny and Henry have lots of local information and recommendations. We hope to be back one day!

What a wonderful experience staying here. Jenny and Henry went out of their way to make us comfortable. Truly amazing ancient building, and beautifully decorated and furnished….The beds are so comfy. The pool was great. So convenient for not just Margate but all the Thanet beaches and restaurants. We'll be going back.

I had a wonderful stay at Salmestone Grange - both the property and the rooms are as gorgeous as they look (if not more!) and Jenny and Henry made me feel super welcome and well looked after. They had some great recommendations for my time in Margate, and clearly just wanted me to have a lovely time. Both the house and the gardens are just incredible - somehow both one of the nicest places I’ve stayed and really comfortable and easy to relax in. The breakfast is delicious too. Overall this is just a really special place to stay - I’ll definitely be back!

Location

The neighbourhood

Margate is officially trendy. Come for a wide, silky-sand beach and a decidedly arty vibe thanks to a plethora of galleries and Tracey Emin’s school for artists. Visit the Turner Contemporary, discover Shell Grotto's subterranean tunnels covered in an intricate mosaic of millions of shells, pick up a good read at The Margate Bookshop, and don't leave without tasting some sublime seafood.

Local points of interest from Henry & Jenny

  • Sandy beaches to walking distance.
  • 20 minutes drive Canterbury cathedral.
  • Royal st George’s golf course within striking distance.
  • Turner Contemporary museum just over 15 minutes walk away.
  • Try Peter's Fish Factory for Margate's best fish and chips or go for something more formal at the Buoy and Oyster - all within walking distance.
  • Crab museum is only 15 minutes walk.
