The Experience

A 1700s coaching inn rescued from many years of neglect. Downstairs find stripped wooden floors or original flagstones, roaring fires on chilly days and a glass wall to the brewery area. Lots of comfy wingback chairs encourage loafing while you decide what to eat: farm to fork local wherever possible, homemade puddings, family Sunday lunch. Try a pint of ‘Goldie’ from their own Four Mice brewery, or a very reasonable wine list by the glass.

Upstairs are extremely comfortable bedrooms, all different in style but with homemade goodies, coffee machines, Molton Brown lotions and smart bathrooms. Breakfast options include eggs Benedict, sausages from Pughes Piglets, homemade granola and some home-baked breads.

A big seating area out the back means on sunny evenings you can spill out here with something delicious and non-alchoholic if you prefer.

Escape to the beautiful Ribble Valley and discover wonderful walking paths, great mountain biking through the Gisburn forest and superb little market towns with independent shops to visit. Return to feather and down, perhaps a soak in a copper bath, excellent food, wine and local ale.

Stayed for 2 nights one day after they reopened. The hotel was immaculate. James and his whole team could not have done anymore to make our stay more pleasant. We stayed in the Rose room with stand alone copper bath. The food and service were top class, one of the best ran hotels I’ve stayed in, and I have been in a lot. Would highly recommend.

The offer of DBB for the usual B&B rate enticed us to stay and we will definitely stay again. The room was stunningly elegant with a raised bathroom open from the bedroom area, housing a freestanding copper bath and a very large, sumptuous marble shower area. The room was so elegant and very relaxing and comfortable. Molton Brown toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, coffee machine, kettle and an assortment of teas with fresh milk and filtered water. Our 3 course meal was delicious, fresh quality ingredients served with imagination and flair. Super staff, efficient and courteous.

The neighbourhood

In the village there's a good shop and a tearoom frequented by walkers looking for toasted teacakes. So many excellent walking paths criss cross this area. The next village is Sawley, also full of walkers and another pub, The Spread Eagle. Clitheroe, a great little town is 6 miles, Skipton 20 minutes. Mountain bike in the Gisburn forests, join the Tolkein Trail, climb Pendle Hill.

The Ribble Valley, is the perfect place to visit for keen walkers. Climb to the summit of Pendle Hill, famous for its links to the now notorious witch trials of 1612 or enjoy a three mile circular around the local village with equally stunning views.
Standing high on Castle Hill, Clitheroe Castle has dominated the skyline for over 800 years. The Castle Museum tells the story of the town and its surrounding area, the formation of the land 350 million years ago and the people who have lived there.
Holmes Mill in Clitheroe is home to the Bowland Beer Hall, which features one of the longest bars in Britain – at 105ft 4”it is home to 42 hand pulls and is the perfect place for a quick pint or two before exploring the town centre.
Nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales on the banks of the River Wharfe, Bolton Abbey is one of Yorkshire’s best days out.
At the top of Skipton's High Street stands the impressive towers of Skipton Castle. Over 900 years old, Skipton Castle is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England and is well worth a visit at any time of the year.
At the Coach and Horses we have our own, on-site micro brewery. The Four Mice Brewery produces our Coachman Bitter which is a must try!
