The Experience

A huge privilege to stay here surrounded by much history and private access to the gardens once visitors have gone for the day. Your home from home was once the singeing house for the groom and is prettily Victorian with stone mullions and a fabulous vaulted ceiling in the upstairs sitting room.

Walk straight into the kitchen, which has a drinks cooler and all the stuff you need to cook up a storm – you’ll also find milk, butter, a loaf of bread from the nearby Hambleton bakery, a home-baked cake by Fred’s sister Davina and some sloe gin. Workaholics will appreciate the desk in the sitting room and those who prefer to switch off can choose a book and find a place in the garden or by the wood-burner when it’s chilly.

Pack up a picnic on sunny days and find your own spot, hire bikes and enjoy relatively flat paths, chat to the gardeners and get tips for your own patch.

What heaven for gardeners, peace-seekers and nature lovers. You're bang in the middle of the most gorgeous Walled Gardens and when the visitors have gone home you have it all to yourselves. Bring your binoculars, pack up a picnic, wander at will.

A fabulous stay in May Lodge. Everything was top class, from the wonderful welcome basket to the furnishing and facilities in the lodge. The gardens are amazing, especially at this time of year, and we had them almost to ourselves since they were closed to the public. The shop and coffee house were very high quality and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back!

May Lodge was one of the best self catering cottages that we have ever stayed at, beautifully fitted out, comfortable and attractive. The generous welcome pack was a delightful surprise. As the cottages are part of the estate, we were given 24 hour access to the lovely grounds, and we thoroughly enjoyed being able to wander at our leisure when the general public were not present.

This was our 2nd stay at Easton Walled garden and it was as special as before. We stayed in May Lodge with our 2 Labradors who loved the private garden. So tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. The bed was amazingly comfortable. When anyone asks us in the future 'where were you when the Queen passed away' we will say in May Lodge, a very beautiful and comforting place to of heard such sad news ♥️

The neighbourhood

It's quiet here - just lots of birdsong and the odd lawn mower. Some of the prettiest walks - or cycles - can be had from the cottage in this gently rolling countryside. Try a route around Denton Reservoir stopping in the Welby Arms in Denton. Spend a day in Lincoln exploring the magnificent cathedral or potter round Stamford with its pretty Georgian houses.

Local points of interest from Sir Fred Cholmeley

  • May Lodge is in Easton Walled Gardens, the gardens of the former Easton Hall which have been lovingly brought back to life by the Cholmeley family. Guests have free, unlimited access to the Gardens during their stay.
  • We are an easy drive from many parts of the UK - just over 100 miles from each of London, Cheltenham, , Manchester and York
  • The Lodge is on the Easton Estate, owned by the Cholmeley Family since 1561. The Estate's pub, the Cholmeley Arms, is just over 3 miles away and serves the most delicious food.
  • FD Roosevelt (32nd President of the United States) and his wife, Eleanor, spent their honeymoon at Easton Hall, as guests of the Cholmeley Family.
  • The lovely market towns of Stamford and Oakham are within easy driving distance, as is Rutland Water. See Our Local Guide on our website for more things to do and see when staying with us.
  • Sir Isaac Newton was born just across the road at Woolsthorpe Manor, now a National Trust property and open to the public.

Introducing

Sir Fred Cholmeley

Generations of Cholmeleys have managed The Easton Estate in Lincolnshire since 1561. Sir Fred and his wife, keen to introduce guests to the beauty and tranquillity of country life, have been running their Walled Gardens as a visitor attraction since the early 2000s. They live on The Easton Estate, and have holidayed in their Norfolk Yellow House since 2004 too.
