The Experience
Garden and interior designer owners have worked their magic inside and out on this Victorian stone cottage set on a quiet street in the market town of Ramsbottom. Once owned by a local textile mill, a meticulous renovation and kitchen/diner extension makes it feel smart and airy while exposed stone walls, chunky beams and steep stairs nod to its history.
Stroll from the front door to cafés, restaurants and shops. Hop on the steam train to Bury – you can connect to central Manchester from there. Beyond the pretty terraced garden are grazing cows and rural views. It forms part of the NT Stubbins Estate which has woodland walks galore.
Wander home for a spoiling soak in the freestanding tub in your generous king-size bedroom. Cook a meal in the hand-built kitchen then throw a log on the wood-burner and get comfy on soft sofas in front of a movie, or get stuck into a good book.

Location
The neighbourhood
Ramsbottom has an industrious feel with old mills and a running steam train. It's also incredibly pretty with rows of Victorian townhouses and stone cottages circled by miles of wild countryside. It's a bit of a foodie hub with plenty of good places to eat, a thriving theatre and an array of interesting festivals including Holcombe Hill egg rolling every Easter and an annual music festival.
Local points of interest from Nick Woodhouse
- The cottage backs onto the National Trust owned Stubbins Estate. A two mile circular walk through the estate takes you through Buckden Wood, over babbling brooks, and to the Tentering Tower, where cloth from the mills was once stretched and hung.
- Our favourite shop, Life Store, is in the nearby market town of Ramsbottom. Founded by the lovely Laura in 2019, it is home to a wealth of ethical, high quality lifestyle brands. Check out too its original tiled floor and antique apothecary counter!
- Hop on the East Lancashire Steam Railway from Ramsbottom to Rawtenstall, one of the best preserved mill towns in the country. Highlights are the street food stalls at the market and The Whitaker, offering modern art exhibitions, a restaurant and gardens.
- Coffee lovers should check out Grind and Tamp, an independently run coffee shop on Ramsbottom's Bridge Street. With an ever changing roster of roasters, the coffee shop also offers simple but seasonal food - from sandwiches and pastries to a hearty brunch.
- Reviving the historic Worsley New Hall estate, RHS Garden Bridgewater effortlessly combines contemporary and traditional designs, planting and techniques. The RHS's fifth public display garden is a short drive away in Salford, Greater Manchester.
- There are plenty of great pubs nearby - our favourite is The Cotton House in Helmshore. Checking out the foodie scene in Manchester is also a must - book ahead for Winsome, rightfully described as "Northern hospitality and thoughtful British cooking".
