The Experience

Come for huge skies, fabulous walking, interesting market towns and the most spectacular beaches. Your cosy hideaway will be a joy to come home to with a beamed sitting room, lively wood-burner and a shelf of books in case you get stuck indoors. The television is hiding behind a clever cupboard, the colours are soft and the artwork is bright. Lovely to sit at the wooden table in the window to eat, or play a game.

The light, south-facing kitchen has room for two (just), plenty of kit and views over the back garden. Up steep steps to the main bedroom with a brass bed, crisp white cotton and more lovely paintings – there’s a sweet extra single in case anybody prefers to sleep alone or for extra storage. You can eat outdoors at a little metal table by an apple tree – a peaceful spot.

A five-minute drive will take you to a pub but the best one is 20 minutes away, The Gunton Arms and it’s a good idea to book ahead.

Reviews

Belynda your cottage far exceeded our expectations! It is absolutely beautiful and your artwork is amazing. Thank you again for all the lovely touches the flowers wine Marmalade etc. and for looking after us so well. We had an amazing time and do hope to come and stay again in the future. All the best Carol Nick Martha and Wilmaxxx

Carol, Leeds

A cosy little cottage with lovely original art in every room. You can really tell that owners Belynda and Robert have put their own personalities into the renovation and it has turned out wonderfully. It's a perfect base for exploring everything north Norfolk has to offer – days out at the seaside, spotting wildlife, boating on the Broads, visits to nearby market towns and National Trust properties.

Location

The neighbourhood

The main road through the tiny village is a narrow lane with fields on either side leading to miles of flat countryside – excellent for cyclists. From the cottage you can walk a few hundred yards to join a footpath and walk to Mannington Hall, a moated medieval manor with wonderful gardens and a café. The nearest shop for stocking up is at Itteringham, community run and brimming with local food.

Local points of interest from Belynda Sharples

  • Visit in May to see the hedgerows full of colour, the yellow fields of Rapeseed Oil and the carpet of Bluebells in the local woods.
  • Heydon Hall and Village is one of the few remaining privately owned villages in the country which has hardly altered since the day it was built. Walk in the park and enjoy afternoon tea at the cafe or a pint and food at the Earle Arms.
  • Experience Cromer, a quintessentially British seaside resort with its famous Victorian Pier and flourishing Theatre. Learn how to surf at Glide Surf school or just watch from the promenade whilst drinking a takeaway coffee from North Sea Coffee Co..
  • Visit Holt on the first Sunday in the month between April and December for an award winning street market showcasing the best local independent craftspeople, designer makers and food producers and food traders.
  • Visit Cley-next-Sea and take home delicious handcrafted smoked fish and meat from the Cley Smokehouse. And from Picnic Fayre, select from a wide range of local produce, wines and homemade treats.

Introducing

Belynda Sharples

Belynda is an artist who works with both paint and ceramics and her studio is next door. Her husband Robert used to have his own printworks and manufactured wallpapers and fabrics – he also restored almost everything in the cottage right down to the door hinges. The cottage is a handsome reflection of both their characters and talents. They live in Norwich.
