The Experience
You’re guaranteed a cheerful greeting at the bar, where you can sample one of the incredible varieties of locally produced drinks – ales from Duration Brewery, Moongazer lager or their classic Wensum Spritz with Archangel gin. Add a homemade sausage roll and you’ll be very happy. Logs crackle in the wood-burners and there are two snugs for intimate chats.
You dine upstairs; head chef Dominic Aslett is passionate about food and delivers the best in Norfolk produce, including locally grown asparagus, Dexter beef from Heath Farm, venison shot by one of the regulars. Breakfast is a feast – full English, proper porridge with cream, sourdough toast, Guinness soda bread, Norfolk jams. It’ll set you up for anything.
Bedrooms with views have a modern feel with bold colours, contemporary light wood furniture and homely touches: a jar of sweets, homemade biscuits, Nespresso machines; bathrooms sparkle. Summer days in the garden will be sublime.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're near to Georgian Fakenham with its famous Thursday market and independent shops. Walks in the surrounding countryside are glorious and you're close to Titchwell Marsh nature reserve for marvellous birdwatching. Head to King's Lynn for quaint streets packed with period buildings, or visit Sandringham, Houghton Hall, or Holkham – a fine Palladian house with a boutique inn, wine merchants and shop.
Local points of interest from Siobhan
- Sculthorpe Mill is ideally located in beautiful countryside just outside the historic market town of Fakenham, and just 20 minutes' drive from Norfolk’s famous beaches.
- The area is fantastic for walking and cycling, with hundreds of public footpaths and quiet country lanes criss-crossing Norfolk. The Hawk and Owl Trust’s Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve, a haven for wildlife lovers and birdwatchers, is just next door.
- Fakenham hosts a historic market every Thursday, and for those looking for retail therapy, nearby Burnham Market, Wells-next-the-Sea and Holt have lots of fabulous shops.
- Holkham beach (30-min drive) is considered one of the loveliest and most unspoilt beaches in the country. There's also the wonderful Brancaster beach, 25 mins, and our personal favourite for a walk is Burnham Overy Staithe, 20 mins.
- Houghton Hall hosts a range of exhibitions and events and is just a short drive away, as are the stately homes at Sandringham, Holkham and Blickling.
- You can go paddle boarding and sailing in Brancaster, kite surfing in Hunstanton, or have a day out at Fakenham Races or Norwich City Football Club.
