The Experience
Down by the Great Ouse River in historic old King’s Lynn, here is a gem of modern design and sensibility atop a contemporary art gallery, with a grandstand view of the town’s iconic Custom House. The penthouse, a spectacular open-plan space built by its new owners over a formerly derelict 1930s workshop, is super-modern and stylishly clothed in works of art, of course, and natural materials, gorgeous fabrics and clever lighting, all duly attributed to their creators. The bed is a marvel of high-Yorkshire comfort, furniture is by a local wood-worker, bathroom walls are clad in recycled plastic chopping boards. Your light and airy kitchen has black granite tops and charcoal grey units, Dartington glass and sharp knives. Veronica has gone to great eco-friendly lengths, her passions are art and the environment, education and this particular part of East Anglia; she and her husband run Groundwork with huge energy and insight. There’s masses to visit in the town itself, and summer festivals galore. Or launch out for famous gardens, farmers’ markets and the ferry across the Wash for bird-watching and fabulous views.

Your place was indeed a 'retreat' and perfect in every way; artfully decorated, well equipped, comfortable bed with natural fibre linens, a lovely view of a historic building. The location was excellent for exploring and grocery shopping. Using a tourist map, we were able see the historic town on foot. We did a day trip to a sandy beach and visited a historic property. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get away. Just make sure you take time to check out the art gallery.

It is a real pleasure to stay in The Penthouse above the Groundwork Gallery; this is my second time of staying here. The view from the kitchen window of the river Ouse as it ebbs and flows each day is wonderful. The property is well located for walks, within historic KL or along the river either way - great for birdwatching. Close to the shops, bus and train stations. The coast and Sandringham are also a short drive away, by car or public transport. Veronica is a great host. I'll be back

Veronika has been responsive throughout. Apartment very comfortable and perfectly situated in old part of King’s Lynn. We're interested by her use of British materials and recycled goods. This has encouraged us to consider some of the same suppliers for work we're about to undertake at home. Very positive experience in small quiet town.

Local points of interest from Veronica Sekules
- You have the best of all worlds here, right in centre of things near all the shops and restaurants, enjoying one of the town's most spectacular views, yet living in peace and quiet.
- For historic building fans, King's Lynn is second to none. There are no less then 481 of them, grade 1, 11* and 11., including 2 medieval guildhalls, one of which, is Britain's oldest theatre, 2 spectacular marketplaces and 2 grand 15th century churches
- Along the Great Ouse river quay you will find England’s only surviving Hanseatic Warehouse, dating from 1475 - now a popular bar and restaurant. where it is lovely to sit in the evenings.
- A short drive out of town to the North and East takes you to the huge sandy beaches of the Norfolk coast, to its important bird reserves, to local sights of Castle Rising, Houghton, Holkham and Oxburgh Halls and the Royal Sandringham estate.
- You are within 5 minutes of at least 3 great restaurants: Bank House was Town Pub of the Year for 2017; Goldings is a good gastropub and Marriotts Warehouse has good middle eastern inspired food. Prezzo and Pizza Express are within 5 minutes walk too.
- The Penthouse is above GroundWork Gallery, which is dedicated to art and environment, presenting exhibitions of the highest quality. All proceeds help its work.

An absolutely fantastic place a stones throw from the old town and the shops. Great views of the customs House and the quays. Even the doves sitting on the window sill in the mornings made it something special (so don't open the windows too wide or you'll have visitors). We would highly recommend the penthouse.
