The Experience
Drive three miles from the main road and up one of the Upper Coquetdale hills to reach Kidlandlees. At 1400 feet above sea level, it’s totally remote here and the views from your hilltop setting are spectacular.
Your semi-detached barn is one of five off-grid properties that were renovated by Matthew and Terri, who live in The School House. Electricity is provided by solar panels and wind turbines. You’ll find a welcome hamper of locally produced foods and a bottle of champagne, plus bread, milk, butter and eggs.
Bring the dog and set off for long walks from your door, bikes for challenging climbs and binoculars for birdlife; return to a cosy cottage with a wood-burner and plenty of logs. Fire up the barbecue in your garden and watch the stars come out.

Lovely four night mid week stay - was recommended Kidlandlee as somewhere we could come that would be firework free for our dog - it is an amazing off grid place that is so quiet!! However, there are some lovely villages nearby and some good pubs for a meal and a drink!! We stayed at Leyland Barn and the accommodation couldn't be faulted - there was everything you could possibly want and everything was of a good quality and had obviously been handpicked by the owners/managers!!

My second time of staying here and it wont be the last. A little bit of luxary away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A beautiful cottage with stunning views. Perfectly clean and a lovely welcome hamper back. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Thank you to the Kidlandlee team for another fantastic stay at Leyland Barn, from the doorstep of the cottage the walks into the hills, Kidland Forest and surrounding area are superb, we’ve spotted deer, buzzard’s, a fox , plenty of rabbits and come across an adder on our walks ! There’s plenty of bird life to see in the garden looking through the window while having a cuppa….it really is a special place and can’t wait to come back yet again !!!! In fact already booked for next year 😁👍🏻

Location
The neighbourhood
Kidlandlees is set in a Dark Sky area and has incredible views over the hills of Upper Coquetdale and below the Coquet Valley over to the Simonside Hills. It’s a place to get away from it all – four miles to the nearest village and 14 miles to the nearest shop in Rothbury. You’re just nine miles from the Scottish border. Apart from Matthew and Terri and guests in the other three cottages, all you will see are birds and sheep and the occasional walker.
Local points of interest from Terri & Matthew Stock
- Visit Craigside House! A wonderful day out for the whole family and doggies too. Building camps in the woods, nature trails, kayaking and canoeing on the lake. Beautiful gardens and house full of local history and inventions. Our favourite place to go!
- For Harry Potter fans! Alnwick Castle is a fantastic day out for all the family. Learn about the history of Alnwick and enjoy the beautiful award-winning gardens created by The Duchess of Northumberland. Activities, concerts and magical fun!
- Barter Books is one of the biggest second-hand book stores in the country. Great for rainy days. Preserved beautifully it is located in the old Alnwick Train Station. Sit, read and relax with a cuppa in restored waiting rooms with open fires. Dogs welcome
- Holy Island and the Farne Islands are a great day out. Spot seals and puffins as you travel by boat. Visit the home of Grace Darling, Longstone Light House and find out how her amazing courage inspired the first life boats to patrol our shores.
- Alnmouth Beach is the start of amazing castle walks and the beach itself is stunning and the local’s favourite.. The Village has amazing coffee shops and dog friendly pubs. Visit the School House Gallery for famous local art work and cultural events.
- The Star Inn in Harbottle is loved by guests for its warm welcome and is at the heart of the community. You can dine in or pick up a take away on your way back to the cottage. It's dog friendly too so you can take them with you.

Introducing
Terri & Matthew Stock
Terri and Matthew moved to Kidlandlee Estate from Kent in 2017 with their children and two Labradors. Matthew had a renovation business which he has put to good use on the cottages and buildings, and Terri was a stage manager in the theatre in London for a number of years. They hope their guests enjoy the peace and tranquillity, have fun exploring the hills, valleys and beaches and totally unwind during their stay.
Wonderful stay at Leyland Barn - the Kidlandlee team make it such a comfortable and welcoming space. There was a generous starter pack of bread (full fresh loaf), milk (2pts), eggs (6 organic), butter (full pack), tea (full canister) and coffee (plenty). Along with the gift basket, the cottage was certainly luxurious. The access road is tough but they do warn you. It's worth it for the peace, views and sense of space. The sky is huge there! Thoroughly recommend for reconnecting with nature, walking, wildlife watching and sky gazing. Thanks to the Kidlandlee team for making us so welcome.
