The Experience
The journey up here is half the adventure, going slow is the key and you should start to wind down as the views get better the higher you climb. Terri and Matthew have created a wonderful cluster of holiday homes on what was once a monastery (there is still an extraordinarily spiritual vibe up here) and then a school for local farmers’ children. The history is palpable.
Inside is scrupulously shiny and modern with leather sofas and a big TV screen so if it rains you’ll stay cosy inside. The kitchen is sleek with granite work surfaces, space for prepping and a big fridge so you don’t have to stock up too often. A thoughtful welcome hamper is full of local treats including Northumberland biscuits, chocolates from Choc Affair in Yorkshire and some English fizz.
Stride the hills along ancient sheep paths, sit in your own garden admiring the views and looking out for red squirrels, or having a barbecue on long summer evenings.

We booked this trip back in 2023, and when we finally arrived we couldn’t believe our eyes! We took a 3-mile drive through stunning peaks, which were about 1400 feet above sea level. The views were absolutely breathtaking, and you just have to see them to believe them. The property was beautifully laid out, clean, and tidy, and the surroundings were simply magical. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, there’s a trail for everyone. We had a great time exploring the area, and we were so impressed that we decided to book again for next year. A perfect place to chill.

This was our second visit to Kidlandlee. The Hemmel is quite simply stunning. The utter peace and quiet and the breathtaking views are impossible to put into words. The house is spotless and finished to the highest of standards and contains everything you could possibly need. The luxury welcome hamper and the log supply are examples of how the owners go above and beyond. We are booking for next year again asap!

Location
The neighbourhood
This is Border country in the upper Coquet Valley - famous for reivers, Romans and rivers. Walking and cycling through Kidland forest is superb. The nearest village is Alwinton which has a small pub, Harbottle has a good village pub which also serves as a shop and Pizzeria La Stella. The nearest bigger place is Rothbury, a nice little market town with some independent shops.
Local points of interest from Terri & Matthew Stock
- Visit Craigside House! A wonderful day out for the whole family and doggies too. Building camps in the woods, nature trails, kayaking and canoeing on the lake. Beautiful gardens and house full of local history and inventions. Our favourite place to go!
- For Harry Potter fans! Alnwick Castle is a fantastic day out for all the family. Learn about the history of Alnwick and enjoy the beautiful award-winning gardens created by The Duchess of Northumberland. Activities, concerts and magical fun!
- Barter Books is one of the biggest second-hand book stores in the country. Great for rainy days. Preserved beautifully it is located in the old Alnwick Train Station. Sit, read and relax with a cuppa in restored waiting rooms with open fires. Dogs welcome
- Holy Island and the Farne Islands are a great day out. Spot seals and puffins as you travel by boat. Visit the home of Grace Darling, Longstone Light House and find out how her amazing courage inspired the first life boats to patrol our shores.
- The Star Inn in Harbottle is loved by guests for its warm welcome and is at the heart of our community. You can dine in or pick up a take away on your way back to the cottage. It's dog friendly too so you can take them with you.
- The Rose and Thistle Pub is just at the bottom of the valley and if you're feeling up to it you can walk there have a Sunday roast and walk back again. Offering a different menu to The Star Inn it is dog friendly and well worth a visit.

Introducing
Terri & Matthew Stock
Terri and Matthew moved to Kidlandlee Estate from Kent in 2017 with their children and two Labradors. Matthew had a renovation business which he has put to good use on the cottages and buildings, and Terri was a stage manager in the theatre in London for a number of years. They hope their guests enjoy the peace and tranquillity, have fun exploring the hills, valleys and beaches and totally unwind during their stay.
We had a wonderful stay in the Hemel. The style and quality of the materials are outstanding, and everything feels thoughtfully designed. It’s very well equipped, and the dog package was such a lovely touch, as were the welcome treats for both human and dog! The location is absolutely stunning, with impressive views that make you feel truly disconnected from the outside world. A perfect peaceful escape. Ps the outside light needs a new bulb.
