The Experience

This was probably always a hostelry of some sort: the big building sits on the road in the heart of the sleepy village, close to Bampton of Downton Abbey fame. Food is a big priority and chef, Henrick Ritzen, cooks on an open fire in the centre of the dining room – a performance art. English lamb, beef, pork, oysters and hand cut chips – the menu is seasonal and local, four pumps grace the bar: all local including Abingdon Bridge and Allsops.

You breakfast on a superb Full English, crushed avocado with poached eggs or breakfast muffin with Ogleshield cheese, bacon, egg and sausage. Spill out into the garden on warm days, retire to bedrooms with gorgeous fabrics, soft feather and down, homemade biscuits and bathrooms with 100 Acres soaps and lotions. All well away from the bar area.

Walk onto the Thames Path from the village, hire bikes locally or book a massage in the Shepherd’s Hut treatment room.

Reviews

The village locals must be delighted. What was a closed down old wreck is now beautifully restored, but without losing an ounce of its character. Food is taken seriously, rooms are comfortable and quirky, the staff are enthusiastic and well-trained. A treat to come and stay here, with children or as a couple for a romantic weekend. Bring the dog too!

Location

The neighbourhood

The village is quiet, but does have a lovely deli/bakery/café called Blakes. Bampton is two miles down the road and has good shops plus the fantastic butchers Patrick Strainge. There are good walking and cycling paths including along the river to William Morris' house, Kelmscott. Oxford is 20 minutes by car, Lechlade is lovely and you can hop on a river boat, or wild swim in the weir at Buscot.

Local points of interest from Sam & Georgina Pearman

  • Close to the River Thames at Lechlade, Kelmscott or Buscot. Hire a boat at Lechlade or maybe have a swim at Buscot.
  • William Morris' Kelmscott Manor only 5-10 minutes away.
  • Bampton - where much of Downton Abbey was filmed ,is just down the road
  • The dreaming spires of Oxford are only 20-30 minutes away, a lovely day out.
