The Experience

Delightfully positioned between Oxford and the Cotswolds, this welcoming inn finely balances the original honey-hued 17th-century building with a smart brick extension. Step into the fire-warmed bar and dining areas, sink into a deep leather sofa and consider the menu: weekend pizzas, midweek steaks, always seasonal, with ales on tap and wines by the glass.

Beamed ceilings, flagged floors and candlelit scrubbed wooden tables give way to a contemporary restaurant and private dining space in the newer wing. Bedrooms in the extension are supremely comfortable, dressed with colourful headboards, while the Blenheim Suite is the stuff of dreams with a soaring vaulted ceiling, a grand wooden four-poster and a striking copper tub set within the room.

Fuel up on overnight oats or smoked salmon and eggs before heading to Oxford’s dreaming spires or walking for miles in the green and pleasant Cotswolds. Charming Burford is close.

Reviews

A striking, much-extended 17th-century inn, well placed for walking the Thames Path, visiting Oxford and exploring the Cotswolds. The cosy pub, all sagging beams, flagstone floors and blazing wood-burners, offers good seasonal food or fresh-baked pizzas. Individual rooms are modern, comfortable and peaceful – the Blenheim Suite has a vaulted ceiling, grand four-poster bed and a copper tub in the room.
