The Experience

Huddled near a 13th-century church hedged by ancient limes is a mellow stone pub with immaculate interiors. Find a peaceful alcove for a first-class negroni, or a window seat for tea. You can come by train from London, a rare treat.

There are local beers on draft and many fine wines, but here at The Swan, the food is the thing. Locally sourced and seasonal, it is modern British and delicious. Small plates, Sunday roasts, vegetarian: they do it all. There’s a super private dining room, the courtyard can seat a hundred and has an impressive open kitchen with charcoal grill for meats plus a pizza oven.

Lanes, tracks and stiles start from the door; you can walk for hours. Or follow the road to Charlbury – one of the prettiest drives in the region. Honey-stone houses and wealthy wool churches abound. Then it’s home, to gorgeous bedrooms with spoiling bathrooms. Wake to a hearty continental breakfast, or pay extra for a Full English.

Reviews

The heart of this 16C building which has been brought back to life by young owners still retains the feel of an old village pub; comfortable and welcoming.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Soho House effect has brought the young and well-heeled to this part of the Cotswolds. It is known as ‘Daylesford country’ and Ascott-under-Wychwood, has its own tiny station - two trains to London a day. Daylesford Organics, the most famous farm shop in Britain, is a six-mile drive, as are the picturesque market towns of Burford and Chipping Norton. Lovely walks abound.

Local points of interest from The Team

  • Within 2 hours from London by car, and only 1hr 20mins on the train from Paddington to Charlbury.
  • Only 20 minutes from both Daylesford and Soho Farmhouse, in the heart of the Cotswolds.
  • The perfect base to explore the best of what the Cotswolds has to offer - Burford and Stow-on-the-Wold are both within a few miles.
