The Experience

In the heart of town, overlooking the once-mighty castle, this hotel is a kaleidoscopic dreamscape. Impeccably restored, it’s grand and opulent with gorgeous wallpapers and playful flourishes such as a freestanding tin bath tub tucked beneath a shell-grotto ceiling.

Grade II* listed, it houses one of the country’s largest collections of oak panelling. In the dining room, marvel at the stunning Tudor plaster ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows while feasting on Harry’s ingredient-led, seasonal dishes, served from breakfast to dinner. Linger over a drink at the showstopping brass-and-tiled bar then hunker down beside the wood-burner.

Suites span three floors, huge yet cocooning, draped in rich fabrics with heavy beams and mullioned windows framing views of the market square, the castle, rooftops and green countryside. Each has its own kitchen and dining space, though Ludlow’s restaurants are just a few minutes’ stroll away.

Reviews

A stunning renovation of a deeply historical building in the heart of Ludlow. Respectful of the architectural integrity yet also playful and gloriously exuberant. Henry VIII would approve. Seven unique suits to choose from – you'll want to try them all – and with glorious views. Eating and drinking also feature highly and a strongly ingredient-led menu will not disappoint. Outstanding, well done.

Location

The neighbourhood

Just off the square, the church houses some of the finest misericords in the country. Ludlow itself is dotted with independent, artisan shops, and a plethora of pubs and cafés. Across the river Teme below the castle, Mortimer Forest is just the ticket for beautiful wooded walks, while the Mortimer Trail begins here and winds 30 miles to Kington. Shrewsbury and the Ironbridge Gorge are both within 30 miles.

Local points of interest from Becky

  • Ludlow Castle - When you arrive at Castle Lodge, you can hardly miss our next-door neighbour. This Norman stronghold was built in the 11th century and once hosted the Council of the Marches. It plays a central role in town life.
  • St Laurence's Church - St Laurence's Church ranks among the most-visited Shropshire attractions – and for good reason. This 12th-century masterpiece is the largest church in the county and is home to some of its finest medieval treasures.
  • Ludlow Market With a history going back 900 years, Ludlow's market is as old as the town itself – and is as lively today as it's ever been. The market hosts more than 40 stalls, selling everything from fresh local vegetables to antique curios.
  • Ludlow Shops - Don't miss the chance to explore Ludlow's many independent shops and delis, too. There's something worth discovering around every corner, including boutique fashion outlets, vintage homeware shops and well-stocked bookshops.
  • Ludlow is situated on the edge of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. It is an ideal base for walking and walkers wishing to explore the hills, valleys and forests of The Marches. Ludlow also offers gentler walking opportunities into the surrounding countryside.
  • Guided town tours of the medieval centre of Ludlow have been organised for over 40 years by Ludlow Historical Research Group. They aim to interest visitors and locals in the history of the town and at the same time raise money to support further research into Ludlow’s fascinating history.
