The Experience

Come on down to this smallholding where you can visit Shire horses, Soay sheep, hens and ducks. You’re surrounded by fabulous walking country too with the Long Mynd nearby. Your open-plan living space is a grand spot for reading, planning trips (you’ll find plenty of maps and guides), playing games or watching the smart TV. You cook in a swish kitchen with all the kit (super wine glasses, proper sharp knives) and eat at a chunky pine table, or outside on balmy days.

Peaceful bedrooms – one downstairs with an en suite, a double and a twin up separate staircases – have spoiling linen, plump mattresses and views to fields and woodland. If you haven’t time to cook (or you’d rather be out and about) you can nip to the Guest Farm Shop and pick up home-cooked meals, locally reared meat and ice creams.

Children will head straight to the open-fronted play barn; parents can open the wine and watch, or light up the barbecue and sizzle something local and delicious.

Reviews

The perfect rural hideaway with the loveliest of hosts and quality at every turn in the delightful, oak beamed barn. Outside you are spoilt too with a glorious garden, a rustic byre for al fresco dining, a games barn and even a farm shop to dip into. Walks from the door include an easy downhill to the Bottle & Glass, a gem of a pub. So much on the doorstep and even more by car. A treat indeed!

We have just spent the most wonderful six nights at 'The Barn' - absolutely beautiful accommodation with every detail considered. Amy & Marcus are so kind and welcoming, nothing is a problem. Our 9 year old & 5 year old have loved staying on the farm collecting eggs with Amy and visiting the chickens, ducks, sheep a shire horses to say hello. We can't wait to return. Thank you so much.

Gary, Wrexham

What a delightful weekend stay. Marcus and Amy you are such amazing hosts and so caring. This cottage/barn is fabulous. Freya (4) has had an amazing time feeding the sheep and collecting eggs with Amy. A young farmer in the making. We can’t thank you enough. From scrambling to get a buggy from the locals. This was our 2nd stay and we will definitely be coming back. We celebrated our anniversary with blue skies and a BBQ. Such a special place. Thank you.

This was a return visit for us and we’ve had a wonderful few days again! Great walks- Stiperstones and Long Mynd - breathtaking views! We enjoyed Amy’s homemade cooking from the farm shop - delicious fish pie and lasagne and the ice cream is amazing. Looking forward to a longer stay next time.

Helen and Mathew, Upminster

Our 2nd stay in The Barn and another great week. Mathew loved the fishing and I did some great walks. I recommend Bridges to Middle Farm via Golden Valley, a lovely walk. We enjoyed Wednesday ’Steak night’ at The Bottle and Glass and had fun exploring Shrewsbury and Ludlow.

Location

The neighbourhood

Organise a Shire horse carriage ride from the door, or a Land Rover tour. The fishing lake is a short walk away but hikers will head to the Long Mynd, Caer Caradoc and The Lawley. Church Stretton is a 10-minute drive and has a train station. Bishop's Castle, a delightful small market town is 25 mins, as is Much Wenlock for a historic priory. Ludlow and Shrewsbury are 40 minutes.

Local points of interest from Marcus & Amy

  • Shropshire is one of the greatest walking counties in the UK. The spectacular Long Mynd runs down the middle of central/south Shropshire with the Wenlock Edge on the east and Stiper Stones on west. Not to mention 297 miles of the Shropshire Way!
  • There is something for everyone for eating out close to Middle Farm. In addition to our friendly local pub just a 15 minute walk from you cottage, there are numerous lovely country pubs in the area together with some great Gastro venues in local towns.
  • Whilst staying at Middle Farm, why not enjoy the experience of a horse drawn carriage ride around the beautiful Shropshire countryside on a carriage pulled by two of our resident shire horses, you can enjoy the scenery at the pace of a bygone age.
  • We have some beautiful local towns within easy reach of Middle Farm including Shrewsbury with over 600 listed buildings in the town centre alone, the medieval market town of Ludlow and Ironbridge the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
  • If you enjoy heritage, castles and other historical sites, you’re spoilt for choice in Shropshire with many National Trust and English Heritage sites including Attingham Park, Powys Castle, Croft Castle, Berrington Hall and The Priory at Much Wenlock.
  • Experience what life was like back in Victorian times with visits to Blists Hill, a beautifully recreated Victorian Town or Acton Scott which offers visitors the chance to experience rural life in a horse drawn pre-industrial era.
