The Experience
The foundations date back to the 16th century but the beautiful renovations shine: a cool, uncluttered bar with a New England feel, a dining room with slate floors and a huge log fire. Here you can feast on innovative modern British cooking, or step next door to the new wine bar, Ernest & Co, for tapas, sharing dishes and excellent wines. Up a winding staircase find gorgeous bedrooms with oak or wrought iron Feather & Black beds, White Company Linen on feather and down duvets and pillows and spoiling bathrooms – for a very special night away choose the Loft Suite. There are also three lovely self-catering cottages for families.
Food is very good: breakfasts are continental or hot; lunch and dinner menus are seasonal and change throughout the week – the service is exceptional.
Explore the Stretton Hills and Long Mynd, go canoeing and fishing on the river Severn. Return for afternoon tea in the café bar, then flickering candles and Wye Valley ales on tap – the smart Georgian building shines after dark. You’re central in town, for shopping, dining and the historic abbey.

Location
The neighbourhood
Shrewsbury is a small medieval town and the hotel is at the heart. It’s just a few steps to Wyle Cop’s independent shops, cafes, bars, the half-timbered buildings of the Bear Steps, and the ancient Dogpole (not as odd as it sounds). Within half an hour’s drive there’s lovely Georgian Ludlow; Ironbridge – the birthplace of the industrial revolution; and Powis Castle’s Baroque gardens.
Local points of interest from Rachael Chidlow
- The lion and pheasant is located on the historic medieval street Wyle Cop , famous for its independent shops and cafes.
- Shrewsbury s famous market hall has been named as the best country market in England open on Fridays and Saturdays.
- The lion and pheasant is a stones throw from the English bridge over the river Severn.
- The lion and pheasant is closely connected to the river walk around the meander of the river Severn and its beautiful river park.
- The Lion and pheasant is part of the historic town centre with its black and white Tudor buildings and medieval street pattern.
- Many ancient churches are clustered together close by, creating beautiful views and interesting walks.
