The Experience

This is a super pad for a getaway; this corner of Somerset is great for easy walks and foodie delights. Ramble straight from the door, explore farm shops and cider makers. Try Perry Cider Mills at Dowlish Wake or Barleymow’s Farm Shop and florist near Chard (both six miles). Then head back to whip up supper with all your goodies and throw some logs on the fire.

There are two pubs in the village if you don’t fancy cooking: The Bell does wood-fired pizzas and The Five Dials does upmarket pub grub. Ilminster is a five-minute drive, filled with independent shops and cafés, it’s great for a rainy day potter around.

Back at base it’s cosy and inviting: an open plan living room, a separate kitchen really well-kitted out and up a spiral staircase to a sumptuous bedroom. Outside is a small, flower-filled courtyard with a table and chairs – all yours. The friendly owners live on the property.

Reviews

Tastefully decorated cottage with everything needed for a very enjoyable short stay. The accommodation was spotlessly clean, and the owners have made excellent use of the space. We especially enjoyed the wood burning stove and extremely comfortable bed. The pub, The Bell, just a few minutes walk away, provided a couple of evenings of great entertainment, in a friendly and warm atmosphere.

We’re just back from a wonderful stay at this beautiful cottage which has been renovated to an exceptionally high standard, with everything having been thought of! Glenda is a fantastic host and recommended some great places to visit and to eat - The Candlelight Inn in particular is definitely worth a visit. We visited with our 2 small dogs who equally enjoyed their stay and loved exploring the nearby beaches, national trust woodlands and quaint villages. Can imagine it would be lovely and cosy in the winter with the wood burner lit so we will definitely look to venture back! - Lisa

We visited Bramley cottage during a sunny week in June and were warmly greeted by Glenda. It is an immaculately presented and spotlessly clean cottage with a lovely patio area, set within a village with 2 pubs doing excellent food and both within very easy walking distance and with a post office/shop for essentials. National Trust and RHS have properties/gardens within an easy drive, making it a perfect location for us. We can highly recommend a stay here in it's peaceful setting.

An absolutely beautiful cottage, done to an incredible standard. Everything was so well thought through and our stay felt so relaxing as a result. Such a beautiful home from home. Felt very private too, and felt very much at ease coming and going. Everything from the kitchen, log burner, bed linen (!) was perfect. We’ll definitely be back!

A sumptuous bolthole for a couple. Bramley Cottage is equipped to the highest of standards with unique décor. There's a cosy wood burner in the autumn/winter and a lovely sunny courtyard garden in warmer weather. Great to have 2 pubs and village shop within walking distance and also the open countryside on your doorstep. Lovely location for exploring beautiful Somerset/Devon/Dorset towns, villages and coastlines.

Location

The neighbourhood

Broadway is peaceful and has a village shop if you need a pint of milk or a loaf. Ilminster is your best bet for food shopping, it's also good for cafés and restaurants and has a thriving Arts Centre. There are gentle walks from the door or head to The Blackdown Hills AONB for more moderate hiking and cycling. There are six circular walks of varying levels starting in and around Chard (6 miles).

Local points of interest from Glenda & David Isaac

  • Somerset is renowned for its traditional pubs. Within a quick easy stroll are two such establishments! Warm and welcoming, the faint whiff of smoke from log fire. Beer on draft, good food and a dog at your feet. What could be better!
  • We are in the peaceful heart of rural Somerset, in the centre of a peaceful village, local circular walks from your doorstep. Weave around country lanes and bridal paths, taking in wonderful rural scenery and wildlife. Then come back and relax in comfort.
  • We are 35mins from the Jurassic South Coast. Long pebbled beaches, safe swimming and old fishing communities make this a wonderful day out. Try your hand at fossil hunting, mackerel fishing, or enjoy a crab sandwich on the beach, this is the place to do it
  • Perry's Cider Mill is a real treat and only a short drive to Dowlish Wake, enjoy a Perrys Cider and a ploughmans in the Cider Mill tearooms. Julian Temperley’s cider and cider brandy distillery over at Burrow Hill is another super treat for cider fans.
  • The National Trust opens houses and gardens nearby; Barrington Court, Montacute House, Lytes Cary Manor and Tintinhull House to name but a few. Other lovely gardens to visit are at Hestercombe, Forde Abbey and East Lambrook Manor.
  • We are close to many historic market towns and villages. The nearby town of Ilminster bristles with independent food specialists, antique shops, art galleries and craft boutiques clustered around the market square.

Introducing

Glenda & David Isaac

Glenda and David bought Stepps House and the two adjoining cottages in 2019. Both cottages were practically derelict and they have spent a couple of years restoring them and sympathetically bringing them back to life; and at the same time adding all the mod cons to make your holiday relaxing and easy. Glenda grew up here and after living in Exmoor for 30 years has returned to be close to family.
