The Experience

It’s a joy to stay in this quirky, architect designed space. You’re high up and enter via an external staircase from the second floor viewing platform; find a double bed, smart shower room and a space for a kettle, fridge, toaster, then a mezzanine up a ladder for long, harbourside views or just to escape with a book. Wander to the restaurant downstairs if you want for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea with home-baked cakes and delicious locally-sourced dinners.

Visit the gallery spaces, talk to local artists, explore the concept behind East Quay – it’s had an explosive impact, not only on Watchet but on the architectural world, described as ‘the most interesting’ design in the UK at the moment. Walk down to the (nearly enclosed) harbourside to find out about the maritime history of the town, its connection with paper making and Victorian poets.

Walking and cycling are sublime in any direction, beaches are close.

This place is one of our Sawday’s Community Champions – not-for-profit organisations receiving subsidised Sawday’s membership as recognition for their support of causes and communities.

Location

The neighbourhood

Watchet has a wonderful harbour - gorgeous sunsets give you views to Wales on clear nights, so it's almost imperative to sit on the harbour wall with a local pint and some fish and chips, watching out for large boats and tankers gliding past on the Bristol Channel. You'll find a good market on Wednesdays, pubs and a gin bar. Minehead beach is nearby and there are wilder ones on the north coast.

Local points of interest from Onion Collective

  • Watchet is a lively coastal town full of history, beautiful quirky buildings, and stunning scenery. From markets and music festivals to steam trains, carnivals, and fireworks, Watchet is brimming with exciting events all year round!
  • East Quay is an arts centre of galleries, local artists' studios, an ethical shop, and cafe/restaurant. We frequently host a variety of events and workshops, so please make sure to check the 'What's On' page of our website!
  • East Quay is only a ten-minute walk from two different beaches, one of which is perfect for rock pooling and fossil hunting. (Visitors often unearth some of the earliest fossil ammonites recorded in Britain!)

Introducing

Onion Collective

After developers kept pulling out of the site, five local women decided to launch Onion Collective, a social enterprise. East Quay opened in 2021 and was designed by Piers Taylor of Invisible Studio and Ellis Williams; the pod interiors and educational space were designed and built by PEARCE+Fægen. The five co-directors Georgie, Naomi, Jess, Rachel and Sally, are passionate about the area and residents, and bringing together local and international artists with community groups.
