The Experience

The Hamstone building dates back to the 18th-century and you’re greeted by the whiff of log-burners and friendly staff. You’ll eat well: the restaurant has a seasonal menu, mostly sourced from local farms but also foragers, brewers and cheesemongers living within a few miles. This is cider country and you can join an Apple Heritage Walk to tour and taste, then come back for lunch. You’ll also find artisan gins, English sparkling wines and craft beers.

Bedrooms (one is dog friendly) have been created out of an old skittle alley and come with big beds, fresh flowers, flat screen TVs, Nespresso machines, tea from Miles in Porlock and homebaked chocolate brownies. In the sparkling showers you’ll find sustainable soaps by Hog & Tallow and soap dishes from Barrington Pottery.

Wake for home baked sourdough, sausage and bacon from Sausage Shed, eggs from nearby Lopen, tomatoes and mushrooms from Arthur David and a lazy start with a newspaper.

Reviews

A beautifully kept pub with rooms in the middle of this picturesque village. Victoria and Alisdair have built something truly special and memorable here. The menu here was exciting, original and expertly delivered. It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited about food! I can’t recommend this place highly enough for a night or 2. The staff are fantastic and made us feel truly welcome. The village is great for a walk round including the gardens at Barrington Court. I can’t wait to come back here.

What a delightful country pub situated in a picturesque and tranquil village. Owners Victoria & Alasdair go above and beyond to ensure your stay is special. The restaurant serves local, seasonal and delicious dishes. In keeping with the ethos of the restaurant, the accommodation is filled with local finds as well as being immaculately clean and light. Already planning a trip back!

Location

The neighbourhood

The village is very pretty and you're right on the edge of the Levels, so you can walk from the door. Explore St Mary's Church with its octagonal tower, or wander down to Barrington Court for landscaped gardens, orchards and the empty Tudor mansion (closed in the winter.) The Temperley family farm is nearby and you can learn about cider brandy production. Puff up Burrow Hill for wonderful views.

Local points of interest from

  • The National Trust property Barrington Court is an atmospheric fragment of old Somerset & a 15 minute walk away. Although closed until March 2022, its 4 artisanal workshops selling traditional handcrafted goods, including Barrington Pottery, are open.
  • We are very lucky to be located 3 miles from The Somerset Cider Brandy Company, owned by the Temperley family, whose products can be sampled at our bar. Guided tours with tastings last approx 1.5 hours & can be arranged for a fee of £7 per person.
  • Nearby East Lambrook Manor offers visitors a look around the English Heritage Grade 1 listed, quintessentially English cottage garden created by the celebrated 20th-century plantswoman & gardening writer Margery Fish.
  • The ancient oaks of RSPB Swell Wood are part of a strip of woodland extending for 10 miles & are a 10 minute drive from us. Come to find nesting herons & egrets between March & June, & nuthatches & woodpeckers feed in the winter.
  • We can help you to organise a bespoke truffle hunting trip with the forager who provides our kitchen with local Somerset truffles each week.
  • The Barrington Boar is directly opposite the 13th century St Mary's Church with its unusual octagonal tower which has now been designated by the English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
