The Experience

Hidden in the trees, this once humble shed is now a beautifully reimagined retreat for two. Inside, you’ll find a cosy open-plan space filled with gorgeous antiques and handmade textiles and treasures found in markets in Morocco, Spain and France. There’s a pretty painted bed, and a small but perfectly formed shower room. Light the wood-burner when the evenings turn cool and choose a book from the little library.

Outside, there’s a wood-fired tub for starry nights and a table on the patio for al fresco suppers. If you’re visiting with children, the owners can wheel in a traditional gypsy caravan – it sleeps two and adds even more magic to the experience.

The kitchen is stocked with essentials and pretty handmade crockery, and for an extra fee, you can get freshly pressed juice, organic garden veg, and eggs fresh from the hens delivered to your door. A wild swimming lake and a Finnish sauna await beyond the woods – these are shared with other properties so need to be pre-booked and they come at an extra charge.

Reviews

Sophie and Panu have created something truly special here. The Lambing Shed is full of flea market finds and cleverly crafted soft furnishings by Sophie herself. Inside you'll find a curated collection of books and a well-equipped kitchen. Enjoy quiet moments in the wood-fired bath overlooking the orchard. Sample the apple juice and soon Thornfalcon's first, wines and keeved cider will be served.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walk to Thorn Hill (aka 'the Clump') past a 14th-century church and across the fields for sweeping views of the Quantocks. For food, Taunton (3 miles) has supermarkets, while Ilminster (8 miles), is full of local gems – from a butcher and baker to a cheesecake shop. The Barrington Boar, known for cracking pub grub, is there or try Holm in South Petherton (14 miles).

Local points of interest from Panu & Sophie

  • Thornfalcon teems with vibrant wildlife, from rabbits, deer, badgers and foxes to doves, swans and migrating birds on their flight paths. Its rich and varied natural habitats offer a haven for nature lovers and a sanctuary for countless species year-round.
  • Relax next to Thornfalcon’s 2-acre swimming lake, with its wild spa, wood-fired hot tub and off-grid sauna on the shores of the lake. It's a magical feeling unwinding in nature while watching birds and soaking in the peaceful, rejuvenating surroundings.
  • The farm includes two vineyards and cider orchards, and a winery and cider press. Visit the winery with Panu to learn about the alchemy of drinks creation, explore the vines, and relax with a delicious, chilled bottle at the end of the day.
  • There are many excellent walks and adventures within 45 mins of Thornfalcon, from seacliffs and beaches, to moors, fells and rivers. These span the Dorset and Somerset coastlines, the Quantocks and Somerset Levels, and Exmoor and Dartmoor's National Parks.
  • Ilminster is a lovely town with cafes, antique shops and fashion designer Alice Temperley's only UK outlet shop. It’s our favourite place for local food shopping- Bonners butcher, a brilliant deli & greengrocer, and a shop dedicated to cheese cakes.
  • Barrington is a quintessential Somerset village with a pretty church, an excellent dining pub, the Barrington Boar & an excellent bakery. Barrington Court is a dog-friendly, stunning National Trust property, Tudor mansion and gardens/ parkland next door.
