The Experience
The Swan is open all day and does so much more than serve a good pint. Come for breakfast, or to buy from the pop-up bakery on Wednesdays, then return for afternoon tea and raid the cake stands. It’s right on the bustling street, with a sprinkling of tables and chairs on the pavement in French-café style. Interiors mix old and new brilliantly. You get Farrow & Ball colours and cool lamps hanging above the bar, then lovely old rugs on boarded floors and a wood-burner to keep things toasty.
The airy restaurant has a pizza oven in the centre with large glass doors leading to the patio and garden. Here you dig into executive chef Tom Blake’s fabulous food – pub classics, specials and sourdough pizzas. Bedrooms are lovely. Two have fancy baths in the room, you get vintage French furniture, colourful throws and walk-in power showers with vegan soaps and lotions.
Breakfast will set you up for lovely long walks, sightseeing or shopping.

Location
The neighbourhood
The Swan sits in the heart of this pretty village, often called the Isle of Wedmore as it sits on raised ground, in the Somerset Levels between the river Axe and river Brue. You'll find some nice independent shops and an interesting church, St Mary's. Walks and cycles in the Mendips or on the Levels will be bird-filled and glorious; Glastonbury is close, as is Bruton, Wells and the Cheddar Gorge.
Local points of interest from Rob & Camille Greacen
- Cheddar Gorge – great for walking and more adventurous pursuits.
- Fancy a spot of clay pigeon shooting? Then Brookbank Shooting is the place to go.
- Fantastic bird watching at nearby Nature Reserves.
- Village events can be found on the Isle of Wedmore website.
- Drink cider, it’s one of Somerset’s finest products. Check out Wilkin’s Cider Barn.
- Nearby Wells is the smallest cathedral city in England. You can hear evensong in the cathedral daily. For times visitwww.wellscathedral.org.uk/worship/general-services-calendar/. There are also regular concerts held in the cathedral.

This hotel is really wonderful. We stayed in one of the larger rooms with a bath to the side and it felt incredibly cosy and luxurious. The decor, size and facilities made it one of my favourite places to stay - and as an academic I've been in hotels all over the world. The food downstairs was tasty and they had a good wine selection. Staff were very accommodating and couldn't have been nicer. I have been recommending this place to friends ever since and compared to prices in cities, the room costs are very reasonable. I just hope this review doesn't make it harder for me to book again!
