The Experience
You arrive down a wooded lane reputed to be one of the oldest in England: gates open to the mansion house and garden with swathes of lawn and frothy flower beds; your lovely cottage-on-one-floor is perched high beside your own private terrace with views across the Weald to the South Downs. It really is the dearest space for lovers, with a hugely inviting bed, a wood-burning stove and a round table in the window for meals looking over the garden.
Owner Jackie, who lives in the big house, leaves you a cream tea on arrival day. The kitchen is well stocked with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, spices, teas and fresh coffee, homemade marmalade and jam. Glyndebourne picnics are also one of her specialities – she’ll even send you off with chairs and a picnic table. Stride out to the village, Rotherfield, for pubs, café and village shop.

I wanted to book a special break and retreat to take my pregnant daughter for a few away days to pamper her. I found ‘ cottage in the garden’ on the Sawday's website and it so lived up to all our expectations. It really is quite magical. We loved the coziness of the cottage, and snuggled up together after lighting the wood burner watching many episodes of ‘ The Crown’, cooking suppers and then retreating to the most snuggly bed, like a soft billowy cloud of gorgeousness! Thank you Jacqueline. We have lots of treasured memories of our stay.

We had a wonderful week in this gorgeous and well-equipped cottage set in a lovely, quiet garden. We particularly appreciated the thoughtful touches and fresh flowers in every room - it made the cottage a real home from home. Jacqueline and Paul (and Figgy, too, of course) are very welcoming hosts and always ready to share local tips and suggestions.

It is the view from this delightful cottage which is completely enchanting. But happily you also have a very well equipped kitchen, one of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept in and the most wonderful hosts. Once you can tear yourself away, there are fabulous walks nearby, particularly around Mayfield and more National Trust properties than you can shake a stick at. On your return you will be warmly greeted by Figgy ... and perhaps light the fire if it’s chilly. What more could you want?

Location
The neighbourhood
You're in the narrow country lanes of the East Sussex countryside, tucked away in the corner of the owners' extensive and pretty garden, completely separate from the main house. There are NT gardens and houses to visit, Crowborough is 10 minutes by car, shopping in the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells (15 mins) is fun and the whole area is an antique hunters paradise. Glyndebourne is 20-25 mins.

Introducing
Jacqueline Evill
Jackie and Paul set about the renovation of this cottage with one aim in mind. They wanted to make it the most welcoming, private, romantic and beautiful sanctuary that they could imagine. They've thought of everything to make your stay very special: rugs for stargazing, jugs of fresh garden flowers, help and advice if you do want to venture out.
Holidaying from Australia, we chose The cottage in the garden for a week to explore this beautiful part of England. We were delighted on arrival to find the cottage just as stunning as it is in the photos. Jacqueline is a wonderful host and had a welcoming afternoon tea ready and waiting. The cottage is probably the best equipped cottage we’ve ever stayed in, with lots of thoughtful touches. Beautifully presented, clean, quiet, very comfortable bed and stunning views. What more could you want.
