The Experience

This detached Georgian villa has been cleverly and lovingly renovated. Perfectly blending old and new, it is filled with treasures: art, antiques, sculptures and just the right amount of colour.

The double living room is light, bright and airy, with double doors in both rooms letting the sea breeze waft through. If the weather turns, light both open fires and get cosy on vintage sofas. Two upstairs bedrooms come with pretty balconies and share a smart bathroom; the downstairs bedroom has a contemporary feel with futon beds and access to a shower room.

Rustle up breakfast from your welcome hamper – eggs, bacon, bread, homegrown apple juice – in the galley kitchen where you’ll find everything you might need, and more. Vibrant Hastings is at your feet for beach, galleries, indie shops. Return for a G&T under a parasol on the terrace or in the shade of the gorgeous garden.

Reviews

Located high above quirky, historic Hastings Old Town, this beautifully restored and very private Georgian villa is a haven of peace and tranquillity in this vibrant seaside town. Refurbished in contemporary-vintage style, it has a south-facing terrace and colourful exotic garden, the place to relax in summer, while upstairs bedrooms have small balconies with views across rooftops to the sea.

Location

The neighbourhood

A 10-minute stroll takes you into the trendy Old Town with its pebble beach, clinking boats, fishing sheds, eclectic shops, good eateries and the Hastings Contemporary art gallery, open Wednesday to Sunday and bank holidays. Owner Oliver has a handy online guide to share with guests. Ore and Hastings rail stations zip you into London.

Local points of interest from Oliver

  • Hastings Pier is a pleasure pier with a mixed history, built in 1872 and enjoying its prime in the 1930s. Here you'll find Samphire Sauna, a Nordic-inspired wood-fired beach sauna on the pier.
  • The Stade is the shingle beach in Hastings Old Town - it has been used for beaching fishing boats for more than a thousand years. Stroll along Pett Level, an unusual beach and special place for walking which merges into the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve.
  • The funicular railway is an interesting curiosity and easy way of getting up to the top of the hills!
  • Hastings Country Park was formed in 1974 and covers 345 hectares east of Hastings. Sandstone cliffs, glens covered with gorse and trees, footpaths, nature trails, picnic areas and ample car parking.
  • Try Rock a Nore Kitchen in the fishing quarter of the Old Town for expertly cooked local catch of the day. The Stag Inn is a quirky old local pub with decent food and a nice garden. The Old Pawn Shop is great for small plates and cocktails.
  • Pick up fresh sourdough at Maker + Baker, or stock up at Penbuckles Delicatessen, which also has a tearoom. Browse antiques at Goods Depot, and take a look in Hendy Homewares, a home store from a bygone era.
