The Experience
A Georgian façade on the high street hides a wonderfully wonky 16th-century interior with stone fireplaces, panelled rooms and creaking corridors. Restored with a sure hand, the unique character has been retained and plenty of creature comforts added. This was once the inn of 18th-century chef William Verrall (whose recipe book is still in print), and the haunt of the radical Thomas Paine and The Headstrong Club, who met here.
Bedrooms are scattered over three floors and all have their own quirks. Some tuck under the eaves, others have space for a sofa and a long soak. Expect super-king beds, Bramley goodies, Illy coffee machines and homemade treats under a cloche. Some (Luxe) rooms have roll-top baths and generous rain showers.
Breakfast is served in the new, light-filled Orangery or on the terrace if the weather behaves. Stay for dinner: seasonal dishes, local ales and Sussex wines make it easy to linger longer.
