Red Lion at East Chisenbury

It’s not your average pub and you won’t find anything other than beautifully dressed tables in the restaurant, with fresh flowers, sparkling glasses, an à la carte menu (they’re in the Michelin guide) and an extra private dining room upstairs. Owners Guy and Brittany are also chefs: everything is homemade, even the breads, pastries, muffins and granola on the breakfast table – often guests have three courses. Later you can spill out into the gardens and peruse the veg patch with a glass of something from the long wine list, or a pint of local ale.

Bedrooms are just down the road in a red brick converted house which overlooks the River Avon. These are bright and sumptuous, each with bi-fold doors to their own terraces. Early morning tea or a sundowner here watching the water meandering by will be restful. You’ll also find little fridges filled with fizz, spirits and soft drinks.

Bring your rod and try your luck on the river – the Inn has fishing rights.
