The Experience

It’s not your average pub and you won’t find anything other than beautifully dressed tables in the restaurant, with fresh flowers, sparkling glasses, an à la carte menu (they’re in the Michelin guide) and an extra private dining room upstairs. Owners Guy and Brittany are also chefs: everything is homemade, even the breads, pastries, muffins and granola on the breakfast table – often guests have three courses. Later you can spill out into the gardens and peruse the veg patch with a glass of something from the long wine list, or a pint of local ale.

Bedrooms are just down the road in a red brick converted house which overlooks the River Avon. These are bright and sumptuous, each with bi-fold doors to their own terraces. Early morning tea or a sundowner here watching the water meandering by will be restful. You’ll also find little fridges filled with fizz, spirits and soft drinks.

Bring your rod and try your luck on the river – the Inn has fishing rights.

Reviews

This is a gloriously homely pub with a really special focus on the food and drink. Lunch was delicious, and from what I hear, breakfast sounds fantastic too. I would love to come and stay the night, relax on my own private terrace and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are good walks and cycles from the village. You can join the Wiltshire Cycleway at nearby Coombe (2 miles away) for a 160-mile loop. Upavon, 2 miles, has the nearest shop and a couple more pubs. Visit the carved White Horse at Westbury, Stonehenge or Devizes (all a short drive) for the Wadworth Brewery where you can book in a tasting of Wiltshire ales. Lacock and the Fox Talbot Museum is 20 miles.

Local points of interest from Guy & Brittany Manning

  • Stonehenge World Heritage Site is 15 minutes away, Avebury stone circles (one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain) are not much further.
  • There are endless beautiful footpaths and walks directly from the pub to the open, rolling fields of Salisbury Plain. Or just down the road head to Alton Barnes, Adam's Grave for one of the best 2 hour circular walks in the country.
  • The Guest House is riverfront on the Avon, you could cast a line in or walk along the river. Superb wild swimming spot and diving pool in the village!
  • Local area is great for outdoor activities. Why not try Sky Diving with the Red Devils just down the road at Netheravon? There's shooting at Rushall, fishing at Manningford, off-road cycling along the tank tracks.
  • The Great Bustard project is a walk away. A natural wonder; the Great Bustard is the world’s heaviest flying bird with reliable records of individuals weighing over 20 kgs. A fully grown male stands over 1 meter tall and has a wing span of over 2 meters!!
  • The pub is open all day long in case you get thirsty ( and after all that you certainly should be!)

Introducing

Guy & Brittany Manning

Guy and Brittany have a background in fine dining and she is a trained pastry chef, hence all the beautiful pastries, breads and croissants. Guy's parents have been involved since they opened in 2008 and now even their two young children sometimes help out. They're very hands on and you will see them popping in and out, but the manager is Martin. He's friendly and professional and manages a small team of dedicated staff.
