The Experience

On the hem of the Longleat estate lost in the country is this lovely pub. They’re committed to good food: the kitchen turns out delicious, locally sourced dishes using meat and game from the estate. Breakfast is a generous affair of pastries, fresh fruit or something hot. The wine list is huge and they serve three ales on tap – book the private upstairs dining room for special meals.

Choose from one of 16 bedrooms, some upstairs, some in the stables with their own outdoor patio space. You’ll feel romantic in the attic rooms, tucked away in the eaves. Every room is big enough to lounge in; each one has a spoiling en suite (lots have a bath) stocked with Bramley smellies and a few are dog-friendly.

Soak up the sun on the tree-lined terraces or on the picnic benches on the lawn. There’s a sandpit to keep kids entertained and a thriving kitchen garden to inspire you. Walk off lunch with a stomp up to King Alfred’s Tower and around Stourhead.

This is the kind of pub you hope to find. A good dose of the traditional with a cosy bar, decent beer and pub grub, but if you are feeling a little more sophisticated - there's an enticing wine list and menu to keep even the most discerning foodies happy. Sitting on one of the terraces on a sunny day, G&T in hand would be hard to beat. If you're staying, even better - simple, stylish rooms await.

The neighbourhood

It's a 20-minute walk through the estate to Longleat house itself. A 20-minute drive south will take you to Park Hill Iron Age fort and King Alfred's Tower (climb to the top of the folly for superb views). The bluebells are phenomenal in spring. A few minutes further is Bruton, check out Hauser & Wirth for exhibitions, The Chapel for wood-fired pizza, Osip for a special dinner. Frome and Bath are a half-hour drive.
