The Experience

It’s oh so cosy walking in here, with antique furniture, interesting artwork and flickering candlelight, rugs on wooden or slate floors, wood-burners or open fires, a collection of pewter mugs and decanters – this has been a coaching inn since 1865, so you’re breathing in history. Jaek Kelly is at the helm in the kitchen where the menu is shaped by the seasonal South West larder: local game, farm-reared meats, Cornish day boat fish and locally grown vegetables. Try their own Hare Ale with your food, or something else tasty from a local brewery.

Sleep it all off in fine bedrooms (some in the main building, others in the Coach House) with Siberian goose down duvets, rich fabrics, huge roll-top baths and a handy larder of treats. Spend balmy days in the sunny garden.

Wake to scrumptious breakfasts – try local chalk stream trout with perfectly cooked scrambled eggs on toast, or if you need it, help yourself to a bracing Bloody Mary.

We think you'll love

  • The beautifully designed bedrooms – even the smallest are without compromise and very pleasing
  • The food – Jaek and his team are great innovators and deeply committed to the abundance of good produce they're surrounded by
  • Setting off on a good network of surrounding footpaths – you can walk to their sister pub, the Bath Arms, perhaps for a restorative lunch

Reviews

A stunning addition to the Beckford stable of stylish country pubs with rooms. Close to Stourhead and Bruton, it's a cosy, sophisticated rural bolthole, filled with art and antiques, roaring fires, flickering candles, and oozing rustic country-house charm. Relaxing rooms are a real treat; some have baths big enough for two. Food is locally sourced and delicious – don't miss the fabulous breakfast.

The neighbourhood

You're in the heart of the village of Maiden Bradley with houses on either side, an interesting church with 12th-century roots, and a community shop. The inn is a good spot from which to explore Bath or the trendy small towns of Bruton and Frome. Stourhead is just three miles down the road, and a gentle ramble across fields will take you to the Bath Arms on the edge of the Longleat Estate.
