The Experience

The building has 17th-century roots with Georgian, then Victorian add-ons, so you’ll find large fireplaces, oak or elm floorboards, a beautiful curved staircase and huge bay windows for gazing at mature trees, smooth lawns and a small lake. Settle in the drawing room with its comfortable sofas, cheering wood-burner and a chest full of puzzles and games, or take a book to the sunny morning room and be intrigued by the honesty bar.

Bedrooms are on the first floor and have high ceilings, thick natural fibre mattresses and the softest feather and down; huge bathrooms are scented courtesy of Bramley and have separate loos. Two have window seats with plump cushions and all have gorgeous fabrics. Wake to proper porridge, a full English, veggie options, smoked salmon bagel or hearty bubble and squeak.

Footpaths lead around the seven-acre garden for wildlife spotting (hares are often sighted) and you can easily drive to pubs, shops and culture.

Reviews

Such a beautiful, ancient house and it's very lucky that Claire and Aurelius bought it. They've cleverly introduced essentials like proper wiring and decent heating without taking away any of the lovely details – oak or elm floorboards, delightful curved staircase, elegant sash windows with original glass. It's a triumph, they are gentle hosts and breakfasts will set you up for anything.

Introducing

Claire & Aurelius Braunbarth

Claire has a background in set decoration and jewellery making, Aurelius owned a cocktail bar in Clifton for 12 years, so he understands great customer service. They've restored the house with much integrity, updating the heating and bathrooms, but never losing sight of the character of the building and its heritage. They are natural, easy hosts and enjoy making your stay as brilliant as possible.
