The Experience

It’s a lovely Georgian house and you can see much of its history in photographs on the walls – it feels very distinctly a home, but with no lack of style and comfort. There’s plenty of space downstairs for a quiet read by the wood burner, a game of pool in the library or a gaze at the lovely garden from armchairs in the bay window.

Four bedrooms are upstairs and all have deep mattresses from Harrison Spinks, a choice of pillows, fine antiques and comfortable seating – three look over the garden. Bathrooms are pristine with plenty of shelf space and Scottish Fine Soaps treats. Breakfast is a feast, enjoyed in the garden on balmy days: fresh juice combinations and compotes made with fruit from the garden, cheeseboard including a Yorkshire Pecorino, then full English or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, avocado and tomato toast – the list goes on!

Next door a field of horses and geese, then a walk through woodland to the Leeds Liverpool Canal and birdwatching.

Reviews

Richard and Elspeth are charming hosts who offer their home and their time graciously. You will feel as though you are staying with friends in timeless, classy luxury. English hospitality at its best.

Michelle, Twickenham

Our stay at Outwood House completely exceeded our expectations. Richard and Elspeth’s warm welcome to their beautiful home and their incredible attention to detail during our stay made our B & B visit very special. Their 4 rooms are beautifully appointed with a totally sumptuous feel. If you’re looking for a country stay with a luxurious but personal touch only a stone’s throw from Leeds then Outwood House is the perfect place. Just make sure you book for more than a night as you won’t want to leave!

Judith, Winchester

We were looked after so well by Richard and Elspeth who were charming hosts - a welcome drink awaited and a fire lit especially for us! They could not have done more to perfect out stay at Outwood House which was the most handsome of period houses in an oasis of Leeds, set in a very pretty walled garden. The house is beautifully decorated and cared for and we were made to feel at home the moment we stepped through the door. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice. We will be telling our friends who head north - as for us, we will return for sure!

Location

The neighbourhood

Walking in the Yorkshire Dales is sublime and cyclists will be happy, but it's a short hop to the city. Here you'll find everything from designer shops to super restaurants, clubs, bars, the Grand Theatre and Opera House and the iconic Leeds Playhouse. See some big names in the music world at the Leeds Arena, visit Kirkstall Abbey or book an event or exhibition at Harewood House (30 mins).

Local points of interest from Elspeth & Richard Taylor

  • Excellent local restaurants including Bavette - rated Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide and best community restaurant in the Good Food Guide 2024.
  • We are a country house in the city - you can walk locally in woods and along the River Aire and Leeds-Liverpool canal and hardly be aware of the city.
  • Leeds city is less than five miles away offering Opera North, Northern Ballet, Leeds Playhouse, Grand Theatre, City Varieties, Henry Moore Institute, Royal Armouries...
  • The Yorkshire Dales are on our doorstep - guests love exploring Wharfedale, Malhamdale and Nidderdale, all within one hour's drive.
  • Cricket and rugby are less than two miles away at the magnificent Headingly Stadium, and Premiership football at Leeds United near the city centre.
  • Relaxing in the garden at Outwood House - snoozing on the sun loungers, touring the kitchen garden, or sipping a drink on the terrace at sunset.

Introducing

Elspeth & Richard Taylor

Elspeth (who grew up in this house) and Richard bought the house from Elspeth's parents and started restoring it in 2011. They do everything themselves and Elspeth's father tends the magnificent kitchen garden. They have masses of enthusiasm for this new project and it shines through in every detail. They are happy to give of their space and their time.
