The Experience

Climb the metal outdoor steps to your little retreat – inside is stylish and feels roomy, wood glows on floor and beams, rugs are bright and the sofa is large. You’ll find board games, books and Netflix for rainy days, plus a fully equipped kitchen with double oven, mini dishwasher and all the pots and pans you could possibly need. You’re left a generous amount of goodies too: their own eggs from pasture-raised hens, homemade biscuits and marmalade.

The super-king bed has a deep mattress, crisp sheets and a beautiful upcycled headboard; views from here are over the neat gardens to farmland and trees. Ease yourself into the clawfoot bath for a soak, or into the big shower – the bathroom is charming. Step outside to flower-filled pots, a pond with a picnic area and mown paths to Fountains Abbey.

Ripon is a ten-minute drive, known as the Gateway to the Dales, so walking and cycling will be endless. Nice to return to this cosy nest.

Reviews

This is a slice of heaven on a summer’s day. It gave me a happy feeling to be here and know that Maggie cares deeply about her guests, their comfort and enjoyment is forefront in all aspects.

Location

The neighbourhood

The farm sits opposite Fountains Abbey, one of Yorkshire's most iconic sites, and with a wonderful water garden and deer park. Ripon Cathedral – medieval, with an Anglo Saxon crypt – has sung Evensong most days for sacred music in glorious surroundings. Nearby Newby Hall has the largest herbaceous border, and there's stunning sculpture at The Himalayan Garden in Grewelthorpe.

Local points of interest from Maggie Johnson

  • Mallard Grange is a working farm, with crops, cattle, sheep, pasture raised hens, and 9 pigmy goats with minds of their own! Meat, honey from bees on the farm, eggs, lemon curd and other farm produce available to buy.
  • Nature-friendly farming creates an abundant habitat for wildlife: kites, deer, hares, birds, butterflies and bats; hear owls and oyster catchers calling, an oasis for nature lovers.
  • A winding path through fields to Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal World Heritage Site entrance takes about 20 minutes. Carry on to walk The Seven Bridges (5 miles). Numerous other walks within a short drive.
  • The farm includes a PYO Wildflower Field from June to September and pumpkins in October. Pop-up local street food evenings and wellness events take place during the season.
  • Top tips for foodies: G&T's up the road for ice cream. Afternoon Tea, Bettys in Harrogate (12 miles) or Grantley Hall (2 miles). Gastro pub, Grantley Arms (2 miles). Breakfast, Tate's Garden Centre (2 miles). Delivered takeaway, The Moi Raj Indian, Ripon
  • Ripon, one of England's smallest cities is 3 miles away. We also like Pateley Bridge in Nidderdale (10 miles) for antique shops and local crafts. Masham has a Georgian market square, small shops, a market on Saturdays, Theakstons and Blacksheep Breweries.

Introducing

Maggie Johnson

Charles’ family have lived at Mallard Grange since 1933. Maggie used to work in TV until she moved to the farm; she's been doing B&B since 1993 and happy guests return again and again. She loves riding her horse and bee keeping. They have two children who've flown the nest. Indy the Cocker Spaniel and Labrador Tia live here too.
